UFC issues statement on Matt Brown’s podcast comments
The UFC has issued a statement and addressed comments that veteran welterweight Matt Brown recently made on his podcast.
As reported Thursday, Brown took a shot at women’s MMA, as well the men’s flyweight division, during an interview on a podcast he co-founded called “Legit Man S–t.â€
“I always said I don’t know why they put women in the UFC; now I know why,†Brown said on the podcast, which has since been removed from the web. “If I’m [going] to pay $60 for a pay-per-view to watch women fight, they should at least be topless. How many knockouts do you see in women’s fights?
“It’s not really my thing. I respect what they do, but look, they don’t have the body-type or the power – all that s–t – for knockouts. If you’re not a good grappler in women’s MMA, then you’re behind. It’s no different than the 125(-pound) division of men’s MMA in that they’re just really not built for knockouts.â€
Late Thursday, the UFC issued the following statement:
Matt Brown has apologized for the comments made on his podcast, and we have addressed the matter with him. His comments don’t reflect the views of the UFC. There’s no place for discrimination within our organization at any level. The UFC is built on principles of respect, and any statements to the contrary are not acceptable.
It appears the 32-year-old has avoided any type of punishment for the comments.
Brown (18-11 MMA, 11-5 UFC), who who had a breakout year in 2012 with a 4-0 record, continued the win streak in 2013 by knocking out Jordan Mein and Mike Pyle. He’s now won six straight fights, including the past four via knockout. However, a highly anticipated bout against former interim champ Carlos Condit was scrapped from this past month’s UFC on FOX 9 event after Brown suffered a back injury.
