UFC European Tour in London adds Gunnar Nelson-Omari Akhmedov, Igor Araujo-Danny Mitchell
March’s UFC European Tour in London event has two new additions, including the long-awaited return of unbeaten Gunnar Nelson.
Nelson (11-0-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) takes on fellow undefeated welterweight Omari Akhmedov (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC). Additionally, 170-pounder Igor Araujo (24-6 MMA, 1-0 UFC) takes on newcomer Danny Mitchell (14-4-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC).
UFC officials today announced the fights, which are part of the UFC European Tour in London event.
The show takes place March 8 at O2 Arena in London. It streams live on the UFC’s soon-to-launch digital network.
Nelson, a promising prospect from Iceland, has won 11 straight bouts since a draw in his 2007 pro debut. This streak includes some solid UFC wins over DaMarques Johnson (submission) and Jorge Santiago (decision), though he’s been on the sidelines since February due to injuries. The submission specialist takes on Akhmedov, a Russian who recently moved his record to 12-0 with a UFC-debut knockout of Thiago Perpetuo in November. The victory, which marked the well-rounded martial artist’s 10th career stoppage win, earned him a “Fight of the Night†bonus.
Araujo, meanwhile, looks to build off his UFC-debut victory over Ildemar Alcantara, which marked the Brazilian and “The Ultimate Fighter 16″ fighter’s fifth straight win. The grappler takes on Mitchell, an Englishman who’s won five of his past six bouts on the European circuit. All of the victories came via stoppage.
