UFC 169 medical suspensions: Eight fighters get indefinite terms
NEWARK, N.J. – UFC 169′s headliners emerged without medical suspensions following Saturday’s pay-per-view event, but eight fighters received indefinite terms.
MMAjunkie received the list of suspended fighters from the New Jersey Athletic Control Board, which oversaw Saturday’s card at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Leading the list was Jamie Varner, who was knocked out by Abel Trujillo in the opening bout of the pay-per-view. The former WEC champ was given a 30-day term for the knockout and needs a CT head scan and neurological evaluation before he’s allowed to return.
Additionally, New Jersey native Nick Catone, who outpointed Tom Watson on the event’s FOX Sports 1-televised prelims, was given an indefinite term pending orthopaedic clearance of his left knee. He later tweeted that he suffered a torn ACL in the fight.
Perhaps surprisingly, neither Urijah Faber nor Frank Mir received suspensions, despite Faber being on the receiving end of a TKO and Mir taking what appeared to be serious damage during his fight with Alistair Overeem.
In total, nine fighters on the 12-bout card were medically suspended.
The full list of suspensions includes:
Jamie Varner: suspended 30 days for KO, suspended indefinitely pending CT head scan and neurological evaluation
John Makdessi: suspended 60 days for facial lacerations
Nick Catone: suspended indefinitely pending orthopaedic clearance of left knee
Tom Watson: suspended indefinitely pending orthopaedic clearance of right elbow and right foot
