Winnipeg, get ready! The UFC is coming to the great white north once again, and they got a whole stack full of fights that have knockout of the night written all over them. Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans both are coming off losses to top contenders and are looking to re-establish themselves in the UFC light heavyweight division. Their biggest obstacle, each other.. which will headline this event's stacked card. Speaking of knockouts, Roy Nelson looks to extend his string of first round knockouts and the name looking to be added to the list; former NCAA wrestling champion and golden gloves boxing champion Stipe Miocic, who is looking to rebound from his first career loss. In other action; Ryan Jimmo looks to get back to his winning ways as the Canadian three way co holder of the fastest UFC knockout takes on Igor Pokrajac, Canadian female Bantamweight Alexis Davis looks to make her UFC debut a successful outing against Rosi Sexton, and 2005's King of Kingboxing Pat Barry looks to add another win to his UFC career as he takes on equally dangerous Shawn Jordan. Ladies and gentlemen, this is your UFC 161 prediction thread!
Hello everyone, I'm Alex Cochrane as always here to share with you my predictions for this Saturday's big event. Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans both know what it's like to be at the top of what is the UFC's most decorated division; Rashad Evans cleaned house from 2006 to 2008 while recording vicious knockouts over Sean Salmon and Chuck Liddell. He reached glory in December 2008 when he defeated Forrest Griffin by TKO and won the UFC's Light Heavyweight Championship, he lost it in equally devastating fashion to Lyoto Machida and has been crawling to get back ever since. In the midst of all this, Dan Henderson travelled to Strikeforce in 2009 after contract disputes with the UFC where he won the promotion's Light Heavyweight Championship by defeating Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante and after beating Mauricio Shogun Rua in what many call the greatest fight of all time; he lost an less than exciting split decision to Lyoto Machida as well. In the main event; these two finally collide in hopes of getting back in a top 5 spot. In the co main event, Roy "Big Country" Nelson who has won his last three fights with devastating first round knockouts looks to cement his claim to Heavyweight gold as he intends on adding Stipe Miocic to his list of victims. Also on the main card Ryan Jimmo hopes to impress his home country crowd against Igor Pokrajac, Alexis Davis makes her way to the octagon with high hopes for her UFC debut, and Pat Barry looks to slug it out with a man who's just as eager to judging by his vicious knockout power.. Shawn Jordan. It's live, it's on Pay Per View, it's UFC 161: Evans Vs Davis live from Winnipeg! Let's take a look at how I think things will go down this Saturday.
Light Heavyweight (205 lbs) Bout: Rashad Evans Vs Dan Henderson
After dropping losses to Rogerio Nogueira and Lyoto Machida respectively, Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson look to step into the octagon across from one another to finally prove who deserves to hang in the top 5. This one is a potential fight of the night candidate considering that due to both men's extensive wrestling backgrounds can expected to be an all out slug fust. However, we have to take a look at the game plans that both these men will employ, Henderson has had a thing in for making wild fights which is the complete opposite based on Rashad's calculated mix of boxing and wrestling which will most likely be the deciding factor. If I could go by these men's suggested game plans; I'd say that Henderson will most likely win the first round or two. Than shortly afterwards, he will probably gas in which Rashad will use his slow pace to pick apart and take down a tired Dan Henderson walking away with a razor thin decision win.
Winner: Rashad Evans by Unanimous Decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46)
Heavyweight (220-265 lbs) Bout: Roy Nelson Vs Stipe Miocic
Now this is one bout that I would question Joe Silva about, Miocic (who was originally scheduled to compete on the undercard of this event) is just coming off the heels of his first career loss at the hands of Stefan Struve via TKO last year. Where as Roy Nelson is one a hot streak of 3 straight wins, all first round knockouts so if you were to ask me.. I'd say this one's a little bit of a mis match. Now, I'm not gonna explain this one too much into detail but Roy's lethal right hand is always a factor to take into account on this one so I don't think it's much to the imagination that Miocic will more than likely become another name on the dreaded list of victims that Roy Nelson has produced so far. Plus another thing to take into consideration is that in his last fight, Miocic was knocked out by Stefan Struve who demonstrates a lack of power due to his gigantic ectomorph frame. And if Struve can knock him out, I don't see why somebody's who's an expert at knocking people out within in the first round shouldn't be able to do it.
Winner: Roy Nelson by KO/TKO in Rd. 1
Light Heavyweight (205 lbs) Bout: Ryan Jimmo Vs Igor Pokrajac
Ryan Jimmo made his UFC debut in a huge way, knocking out Anthony Perosh in just 7 seconds last summer. And after having his 17 fight win streak snapped by top contender James Te Huna last February, he now looks to get back to his winning ways. Standing across from him is Igor "The Duke" Pokrajac, who posts an unimpressive UFC record of 4-3 with a recent submission loss to Vinny Magalhaes and a unanimous decision loss to Joey Beltran (which was overturned to a no contest when Beltran tested positive for nanodrolone). This is a much win situation for Pokrajac who will more than likely be cut if he doesn't succeed in this fight. As much as I don't like to see another fighter go, I think it's onto the chopping block for Pokrajac who will be ground out by the former MFC Light Heavyweight Champion over the course of three rounds and drop an lopsided unanimous judges' decision.
Winner: Ryan Jimmo by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Women's Bantamweight (135 lbs) Bout: Alexis Davis Vs Rosi Sexton
It's a big event for Alexis Davis, who is one of Canada's most recognized women in MMA. She'll be making history for the first time as she becomes the first Canadian woman to step into the octagon and she'll be doing it in the province next to the one she calls home. Her opponent for the evening will be another seasoned grappler in Rosi Sexton, and due to the both of these fighters' extensive background in jiu jitsu.. I'm assuming this one will be mostly contested on the feet. The edge in that department goes to Davis who has only been stopped once due to strikes (which was the first fight of her career), where as both of Sexton's career losses have come via knockout. This one is definitely looking to be another slug fest in which I believe Alexis Davis will walk away with a close decision.
Winner: Alexis Davis by Split Decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)
Heavyweight (220-265 lbs) Bout: Pat Barry Vs Shawn Jordan
These two beasts have one thing in common - they both love to knock people out. Between their combined total of 22 career wins, 17 of those wins have come by some form of knockout. Which as I've said happens with grapplers negating each other on the ground, I imagine will at some point go to the ground. The advantage there goes to Shawn Jordan who was a former full back and collegiate wrestler for Louisiana State University. However, if that happens I imagine it will have to make it to the second round which I really don't see happening in this one due to these two's ability to slug it out. Let's also keep in mind that these gentlemen are heavyweights and that means that one punch can spell the end at anytime. So who do I think will win in that department? I believe the advantage goes to Barry, quite simply because of the fact that he has a better knockout ratio in his victories and he is the much more advanced striker. Another given is that his slight height disadvantage will make it harder for Jordan to take him down and easier for him to change levels. So my final call in this one will be Barry walking away with a late 2nd round TKO.
Winner: Pat Barry via KO/TKO in Rd. 2
Well ladies and gentlemen, thank you for the read and as always.. feel free to leave your predicitons as well. I'm not asking for them to be as detailed as I have but a little bit of participation always helps. Until next time.. I'm Alex Cochrane.
