UFC 146's Overeem issued suspended sentence, counseling for battery charge
Alistair Overeem today was sentenced to 50 hours of community service and ordered to undergo anger-management counseling for a single count of misdemeanor battery arising from an incident at a Las Vegas club over New Year's weekend.
According to a report from "The Las Vegas Review-Journal," Overeem also received a suspended 90-day jail sentence and is ordered to appear in court on Sept. 26.

Overeem was not present at a non-jury trial held in Nevada District Court; he was promoting his upcoming title fight with UFC heavyweight champ Junior Dos Santos at UFC 146 during a press conference at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, which hosts the May fight. Las Vegas-based attorney David Chesnoff represented Overeem at the hearing.
Overeem faced up to six months in prison and a maximum $1,000 fine for the battery charge. He was cited by Las Vegas Police on Jan. 2 when he allegedly pushed a woman in the face at Wynn Las Vegas. He was summoned to appear on court on Feb. 21, when the non-jury trial was set.
The incident took place three days after Overeem secured a No. 1 contender's position with a first-round TKO of former champ Brock Lesnar at UFC 141. Lesnar retired after the loss..
Overeem (36-11 MMA, 1-0 UFC) vs. Dos Santos (14-1 MMA, 8-0 UFC) headlines UFC 146, which takes place May 26.
A former champ in Strikeforce, Overeem signed with the UFC this past September. With his win over Lesnar, he extended his current win streak to 11 fights.
The battery charge against Overeem will be dismissed if he fulfills the terms of his community service and anger-management counseling.
