Philippou: L - Nick Catone (UD) | W - Uriah Hall (MD) | W - Aung La Nsang (TKO)
How did these two get here?
Rivera had a decent run in the UFC back in 2004-2005, then was selected to take part in The Ultimate Fighter season 4. When he was knocked out by Terry Martin at UFC 67, his UFC career seemed finished, but he came back at UFC 80 to upset Kendall Grove. Since then, he's used his powerful hands to put together a 3 fight win streak. That streak was broken by Michael Bisping earlier this year in what turned into a rather heated, personal affair. At 39 years old, Rivera has discussed a possible retirement following this fight.
Philippou is a late replacement in this fight for the second time in his UFC career. His UFC debut came at UFC 128 when he stepped in for Dan Miller to face Nick Catone. A member of the Serra-Longo fight team in New York, Philippou put together a good string of wins on local shows before coming to the UFC. He also has pro boxing experience, going 3-0 before making the move to MMA.
Why should you care?
If you like two guys throwing punches, this one is for you. Rivera has heavy hands, and Philippou still likes to use his boxing. This has big KO written all over it. Plus it may be Rivera's last fight. Give the veteran some love.
