There wasn't a lot of excitement in the arena for this fight, and most fans felt it would be rather boring. They weren't wrong. Soszynski narrowly edged Massenzio on the scorecards in round one, although it's debatable as Massenzio did complete three takedowns. Unfortunately, he was unable to produce any offense with the attacks, and Soszynski landed enough punches to cut open Massenzio's forehead.
Massenzio didn't have the same success in the wrestling department in round two. Soszynski's size and Massenzio's diminishing cardio proved to be problematic against the fence for Massenzio as he dove in for takedowns. Soszynski was able to land nicely once Massenzio gave up, definitively winning the round.
Soszynski gained an early takedown in the third, moving to side control and threatening with the kimura. Massenzio rolled to his back as Soszynski continued to lock wrist control. Unfortunately, Massenzio left himself wide open for an assault of knees to the body. After three minutes of eating knees to the body and blows to the head on the ground, the referee stood the fight up during a brief stalemate. It was too late for Massenzio by that point.
Soszynski entered tonight's contest following an unanimous decision win over Goran Reljic at UFC 122 last November. He had previously split a two-fight battle with Stephan Bonnar, losing in the sequel via TKO at UFC 116 and defeating Bonnar initially at UFC 110 due to an accidental headbutt that wasn't seen by officials.
Massenzio was released by the UFC following losses to Brian Stann and C.B. Dolloway at UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko and UFC 92 respectively. He defeated Drew McFedries in his debut at UFC Fight Night 15 in September of 2008. Anthony Perosh was originally scheduled to fight Soszynski, but he was forced out due to injury, giving Massenzio one last opportunity to prove he can hang with the best the UFC has to offer.
