Tony Schiavone addresses new commentary role on Collision

Tony Schiavone has addressed his new role as the play-by-play announcer for AEW Collision.

Schiavone joined the broadcast team of Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuinness on Saturday's show in Toledo. He said on his What Happened When podcast recently that he asked Tony Khan "months ago" about potentially doing play-by-play for Rampage before the AEW president eventually offered him a role on Collision.

"I told Tony, I said, 'I would like another chance at doing play-by-play.' And I said, 'I could probably do Rampage.' He said, 'Okay, well, let me think about it.' And I thought I was going to end up doing play-by-play on Rampage."

Prior to Schiavone joining the announce team on Saturdays, Kelly had been doing play-by-play with McGuiness providing color commentary.

"Kevin Kelly is a great announcer," Schiavone continued. "He is so smooth and so good and I really, really enjoy working with him and Nigel. And I know we've only worked together like once, but we've been together backstage for a number of months now."

I find he helps gap a bit of of the awkwardness too. Nigel doesn't wanna promote stuff, he is a defined heel colour commentator. Kellyt is not great at promotion imo. so TS there helps a lot

Tony was so great at promoting. His promotions are still referenced in memes to this day. He’s the perfect man for the job.

I have no qualms admitting that the only reason I gave AEW a chance in the first place was because I heard they hired Tony and he hadn’t been given a job since one night he did a thing in TNA, but not since WCW went out.

I’m hoping this means he’s going to get more of the main speaking job because I’ve noticed he doesn’t talk as much on dynamite anymore. It’s mostly quicksilver.

he seems to talk the most on dynamite during the adverts fucking around with taz. but i think its also a product of taz and x being so in synch now that a third almost feels awkward sometimes during their banter

You know what I actually did notice that Tony gets most of his speaking in during the commercials that I don’t get for Fite.

Yeah, that’s a good point. He might not be needed on dynamite, but I’ll take him as long as he can do both. But I am hoping that he’ll take a bulk of the play-by-play and then Kevin and Nigel can do the baby and heel color.

That was honestly the best use of Mike Tenay as well. Tenay in WCW wasn’t the primary play-by-play, but he assisted Tony as more of the baby color.
