Tony Khan recently commented on wrestlers in his company not getting along with one another.
The AEW president told The Hollywood Reporter that while the situation in AEW's locker room is not ideal, he's not certain it's necessary for talent on his roster to like each other.
"I want the best wrestlers here in AEW. I want the best roster. And there may be some of them that don’t get along with each other backstage or on TV. It’s not ideal, but it’s a reality, and I can’t make everyone get along," Khan said.
"I’m not sure it’s necessarily even in the best interest of pro wrestling for everybody to get along. But ideally, everybody is going to be able to focus on their matches and putting on the best shows for the fans. And I think that’s what we’ve been doing. We’ve had really strong ratings. So even though … wrestlers backstage hate each other and don’t want to be friends with each other, I think we all agree this is a really exciting time for the company."
Khan continued to say that he wants to create an environment in AEW where wrestlers who think they are the best are given the opportunity to prove it.
"There are a lot of people around here who think they’re the best. And I think a lot of them have a valid claim that they’re the best. And what I’m trying to do is to create an environment where everybody can go out and prove it multiple times per week and create a platform where the fans can decide who the best wrestlers are, what the best rivalries are, what the best matches are," Khan continued.
The backstage drama in AEW has continued this month as the company draws closer to Sunday's All In event from London's Wembley Stadium. A report that Ryan Nemeth was sent home from the August 12 Collision due to prior conflicts with CM Punk was followed by news that similar situations had occurred with Hangman Page, Matt Hardy, Jack Perry and Christopher Daniels. The situation was addressed by our own Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Meltzer wrote:
To keep things harmonious and also having to do with legal action or fear of such, the decision was made in particular to keep a number of people away from Punk. Punk and his friends have expressed interest in clearing the air and meeting while The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega and others have never been told or informed about it. Stories about meetings suggested that have been floated are likely stories that management has blocked. This is largely only related to Punk as there don’t appear to be any serious issues with others.
