The Rise Of A New True Mega Power
The Rise Of A New True Mega Power
As 1990 hit and the dawn of a new decade began, so did a new force within the United States, especially in the ever growing World of wrestling. Rupert Murdoch, Australian businessman, owner of the New York Post and British-based satellite network Sky Television among others, decided to set up a new TV Network station based out of New York; Titan TV. With his own station Murdoch decided to capitalize in as many market areas as possible, many top level entertainment based shows were brought on board, contracts for nearly all the major sporting products were signed and as stated a new true mega power was formed; Titan Wrestling Entertainment.
With a Summer debut date ready Murdoch enlisted the help of WCW's Vice President of Broadcasting at the time Jim Ross to build a talent roster that could take the wrestling World by storm. Along with Ross' position as Head Booker he'd also be the lead announcer for TWE, effectively killing two birds with one stone. Joining him soon after was Eric Bischoff, whom was just coming off a failed audition with World Wrestling Federation for an announcer's position, he'd become Ross' right hand man and on screen colour commentator, as Ross saw huge potential in the energetic young man.
Onto the in ring front and the major news, firstly in March of 1990 NWA World Champion Ric Flair was not only fired from his position as head booker in World Championship Wrestling, but also from the company altogether, for what is still unknown reasons. This action seemingly by Ted Turner, lead to a huge walkout of many of his major stars, caused by Turner himself declaring a simple I'm in charge, like it or leave approach. Many of those whom we're either considered friends of Ric Flair or unhappy at the treatment towards a fellow wrestler, simply decided to leave. Ross quickly managed to use this turmoil to his advantage, signing Ric Flair and many others from WCW to a long term deals (inc. Ricky Steamboat, Sting, The Roadwarriors, Brian Pillman, The Steiner Brothers).
On the other side of the fence, at World Wrestling Federation, many wrestlers were becoming increasingly unhappy at the way the company was being ran. Vince McMahon relied upon Hulk Hogan at the top and was very much focused on his pet projects, like Ultimate Warrior whom was in midst of a major push, despite a perceived lack of real wrestling talent. Ross again used the power of this situation and of course Murdoch's millions to his/TWE's favour, signing former WWF Champion Randy Savage, Rick Rude, Curt Hennig, Jake Roberts and a number of other lower card wrestlers to deals.
Elsewhere Ross went on lots of scouting trips, whilst also using his newly signed wrestlers knowledge and advice, which lead to him eventually snapping up many unsigned/non exclusive wrestlers to Titan Wrestling Entertainment. Cactus Jack Manson, Mark Calaway, Steve Austin and Kerry & Kevin of the famous Von Erich's were all signed from USWA. Chris Chavis came from North American Wrestling Association, Scott Hall from Jim Crockett Promotions, The Destruction Crew (Mike Enos & Wayne Bloom) from AWA and others joined the revolution of the new true mega power in wrestling, TWE.
So Titan Wrestling Entertainment was born and seemingly ready to become the force within wrestling, the debut date of Tuesday 1st of May 1990 is set, for Tuesday Night Titans (1 hour show), exclusive only on Rupert Murdoch's Titan-TV.
