This was 100% inevitable. When a movie makes over a billion dollars at the global box office a sequel is inevitable - the only surprise here is that it didn't happen sooner. A sequel to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is now in development over at Disney.
Variety reports that the studio has hired Linda Woolverton, who not only wrote the first Alice movie but also other Disney titles including Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Mulan to script a sequel to Burton's 2010 box office phenomenon. The trade says that all plot details are being kept very hush hush right now - again, no big surprise there - and mentions that Joe Roth, Suzanne Todd and Jennifer Todd will all be back to produce. Outside of mentioning the fact that he directed the first movie, Burton's name isn't mentioned at all, so it's unknown at this time if he would come back to helm the follow-up. For as many remakes and adaptations Burton has done, he has only made one sequel in his career, and that was Batman Returns in 1992.
Getting back to my earlier point, though, is anyone else kind of taken aback that it's taken Disney this long to start developing Alice 2? Successful as the movie was here in the US - making over $330 million during its run - Alice made an outstanding $690 million internationally, and that's where most people on the business side of the industry are looking now. Like many others will probably agree I don't think it's a good idea to make a sequel, but it is still surprising how long they sat and thought about the idea.
