To revert all the attention from retirements, drug tests, referee misconduct, and poor decisions, let's take a look at some actual fights the UFC has decided to make for this summer. Recently it was announced that former welterweight title challenger Thiago Alves and Lethbridge Alberta's Jordan "Young Gun" Mein have been booked to face each other at UFC Fight Night 49 which takes place August 23rd in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
This is probably the best fight that the UFC could make outside of the top 15, and showcases how deep the talent pool in the UFC's 170 pound division really is. While neither men has really cracked the top 15 as of yet, they've certainly had their share of fame and have faced off against some of the best, so this fight should prove to be a good one!
Alves returned from a 2 year+ layoff at UFC on Fox 11, bringing home a unanimous decision win over Seth Baczynski. He posts a UFC record of 11-6 with wins over names such as UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes, Josh Koscheck, Karo Parysian, and Chris Lytle.
Mein, whose family has a long lineage in martial arts also returned from a lengthy lay off at UFC on Fox 11 earning a split decision over Hernani Perpétuo. Although posting a professional record of 28-9, Mein is fairly new to the octagon with his inside record being 2-1. He debuted impressively against Dan Miller at UFC 158 only to lose in a fight of the night effort against Matt Brown at UFC on Fox 7 (a fight he took on short notice). His win over Perpétuo was his first appearance inside the octagon in one year.
