I recently saw a Bill and Doug video, with just one of them proclaiming how the wrestling product today is too cheesey, and how we should all ban together so we get what we want. The concept wasn't bad, but his thoughts were off in my opinion.
The wrestling business today is a lot better than i think people give credit to. Sure things may not be as exciting as they once were, but certainly, all the wrestling programs provide hours of entertainment. Each organization and brand offers a different style of action. Monday Night Raw boast a "Big Name" roster with one of the best fueds in wrestling today. All of their champs are creditable and deserving at the moment. A good mix of veterns and young superstars. Putting personel opinion aside, I think Raw is doing more of a fair job to the show and its fans.
ECW is still a somewhat new organization, and they have carved their nitch in the wrestling world. No longer a hardcore organization, but a hour of action. For what it is, ECW is a great launching pad for young stars.
Smackdown has caught the injury bug, and i cannot say i enjoy the SD product at the moment. I feel they are treading water till Wrestlemnia (or 2009) I feel certain aspects of the show, hurt the overall program. With Smackdown, you are going to the wrestling, that is missing from Raw.
So as you can see each show has a different degree of wrestling and entertainment. In my opinion.
Raw = 70% Entertainment 30% Action
ECW = 15% Entertainment 85% Action
SD = 30% Entertainment 70% Action
ALL champs are credible for the most part. But what the wwe is lacking is attitude and quality storylines. I think the PPV booking and fueds has been their for the most part. Overall though, the wwe is doing a solid job this past year.
TNA Wrestling
TNA = 50% Entertainment 50% Action
Tna does a great job dividing wrestling and entertainment. They have a great roster with some of the most exciting faces in the world today. I think the booking could be a little better, but for the most part TNA goes all out every show and PPV. They are certainly putting in effort, and i don't think it always comes out as good as they would like, but they do offer something new or different to the wrestling fans.
ROH Wrestling
ROH = 90% Wrestling 40% Entertainment.
Now i wasn't planning this before i starting writing this little rant, or analysis of the wrestling world, but ROH does a great job of injecting "Entertainment" Into their matches. Now i know, 90+40 = 130, but its something that TNA should take note to. Certainly its harder for TNA with the pressure of ratings and politics, but if you follow the ROH product, they can have comedy matches and entertainment matches, then go into a very heated fued. Its showcasing entertainment "inside the ring" rather than outside.
Certainly, you can't take one week, and put it under a microscope, but I am looking over the past 12 months. So looking at wrestling today, compared to say 92-93 fans would be crying a river about every little detail back then. Comparing now to the attitude era, depending on the year, i think its safe to the quality of the wwf started going up in 96, hit its peak around 2001 and then started it path back down. Basically what i'm trying to get at, it may not be the WWE's best year ever, however it is FAR from its worst. Now im going to compare TNA and WCW. In my opinion TNA is just an extension of WCW. I think TNA has done enough to be near equals to WCW. Looking at pre NWO adn post/late NWO, TNA has had better years than WCW. I think you can even say Bound For Glory has been better than the average Starrcade. Next up is ROH compared to ECW. ROH being a throwback to putting the emphasis on wrestling. ECW was trying something new at the time. Depending on your taste, both of these companies cater to their target market. Both companies did a great job in my opinion. I think anyone who isn't satisfied with the top 2 organizations MUST check out the third organization before complaining.
Whats your take on the current world of wrestling. Hate it/Love it? Should there be more wrestling on its shows? Too much entertainment? Not enough Entertainment? Why do like the current year, compared to years past. (or why not)
I really think each of the three organizations pulling their weight. Certainly there could be improvements, but looking at what each has done, there are a lot of brightspots. Bottomline, is that i like Trio of WWE/TNA/ROH.
