Back in the World Championship Wrestling days I was a huge fan of the TV Championship division. It spawned undercard talent into Mid Card Champions and World Champions. I remember back in 1991 and 1992 every time I tuned into one of the many WCW TV programs I would see Stunning Steve Austin defending the championship against other great under and mid card talent. The TV Title division produced a great feud in the 1970s between Nature Boy Ric Flair and Ricky “The Dragon†Steamboat, that would be reborn in the NWA and WCW Championship title picture into the 1980s and 1990s. Also, wrestlers such as Booker T, William Regal, and Chris Benoit benefited from feuds in the division.
I’m not going to lie, I marked out when Legends/Global Championship was renamed the TNA TV Title. I thought this would be a great way for TNA to utilize its undercard and mid card talent to produce stars, much like WCW did before it disgraced the title in 1999, with Scott Hall throwing the championship in the trash only to be claimed by Janitor Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Weak!
Anyway, it has been very apparent that TNA hasn’t had the same ideas that WCW had for their version of the TV title, with the exception of the later years of WCW. It is more like a prop for mid card wrestlers who have nothing else to do really. Of the sixteen championship reigns, eight of those reigns have been by a former world champion. Two more of those reigns are also by an already established star (Devon) who really doesn’t need an undercard title either. Why would a former world champion need an undercard championship? Also remember earlier in 2012 when Hulk Hogan said the TV title would be defended every week at impact? How long did that last? Like three or four months?
Anyway, WCW had the TV Champion defend the title on a weekly basis, two or three times a week, and even two times a day on the Saturday morning shows. This gave the fans a title defense every television show and saved the major and undercard titles for special occasions, such as, PPV and Clash of The Champions. So what I would like to see, would be for TNA to have the TV Title defended on a weekly basis, and be used to build up their undercard and mid card talent. It could do wonders for wrestlers who aren’t yet ready to make the jump into the X Division and World Championship divisions. If all else fails and TNA just keeps using it like they’re doing, then just unify it with the X Division title. But anyway, what would you guys do different, if anything?
