I woke up to read several reports about BG James working as an agent backstage at TNA as if this was new news.
BG James has been working as an agent for well over a month or more now.
His 1st week as an agent(over a month ago) he was paired initially with Glenn Gilberti, which might have been a rib...
The TNA wrestlers respect BG James and he has a good head for the business and knows how to lay out a match.
In fact back when TNA was in Nashville, I always booked the 3 Live Crew (BG, Konnan & Killings) in 6 Man Tags on Xplosion nearly every week, many featuring Spyder Nate Webb on the opposing team. BG was always the one to work the match out with that week's three opponents and then just told Ronnie & Konnan their spots.
BG was also used in Houston, TX at the PPV there as an interviewer, which is something they may go back to at some point. I think BG would be great as the color commentator, moving Don West to a Mean Gene type of announcer spot that would better serve Don's real talent as a salesman.
I also saw stories about TNA agents being given more leeway in match structure, and these stories sorta confused me as I do not recall the agents being restricted by TNA creative in match layout (just in the finish) and I sat in on production meetings quite a few times and attended shows.
What I did notice was that in general the wrestlers put matches together themselves while at least some of the agent spend most of their time in the meeting room talking and playing on computers rather than in the Impact Zone where the ring is. These agents would then, prior to the show, go to the wrestlers to get info on spots and dives so they could tell the director. At that time these agents might offer a suggestion. What has not been happening much is that the agents actually watch the match being put together and actually are around to help when help may be needed.
I know I helped out at least once or twice when some guys were stuck not knowing what to do in a PPV or TV match because the match's agent was nowhere around. Scott D'Amore used to hang around the ring quite a bit, Jim Cornette does too, as does Dutch but not all the agents do, and all should as that's the job they are paid to do. The agents should be around the ring from the time the production meeting and lunch are over until the taping starts.
Maybe that's the change that's happening, and if so it's about time.
Oh...and the refs should be around when the guys go through the matches too as they are part of the match and need to know stuff so they don't end up looking like idiots.
