By Agence France-PresseHana Kimura, a female professional wrestler who was among the cast of the popular Japanese reality series Terrace House, has died at 22, her wrestling organisation said, after she reportedly faced online bullying.
Kimura was reportedly found dead at her home, with the cause not immediately known. She had recently posted messages on social media seeming to tell her fans goodbye, and her death sparked a public outpouring of anger at cyber-bullying.
Fans flocked to Twitter after news reports of her death. “I’m sorry Hana that this world was cruel to you and that you could not find your peace,” one user wrote.
Yukio Hatoyama, Japan’s former prime minister, also tweeted about Kimura’s death, saying Japan should consider penalties for those who target individuals for severe online harassment.
Kimura was in the cast of Netflix’s internationally popular Terrace House: Tokyo 2019-2020, a show about six strangers “looking for love while living under the same roof”, according to the US streaming giant.
Local media said her death, which was confirmed on Saturday, follows bullying over her remarks and behaviour on the show, which has been broadcast by both Netflix and Japan’s Fuji Television.
“We are very sorry to report that our Hana Kimura has passed away,” said World Wonder Ring Stardom, a women’s wrestling league in Japan, and changed its Twitter profile picture to one of Kimura.
“Please be respectful and allow some time for things to process, and keep your thoughts and prayers with her family and friends,” it said in English without elaborating.
Kimura’s last post on Instagram was a picture of herself and a cat with the message: “I love you, have a long, happy life. I’m sorry.”
American and fellow wrestler Su Yung said: “I will always love and miss you, my friend. You are my little sister.
Local media said she posted the image shortly before her death was confirmed by a hospital, while she also sent another online message that read “goodbye”.
Kimura was a fan favourite on Terrace House, with her signature pink hair and shy personality contrasting with her persona in the wrestling ring.
In South Korea, cyberbullying made headlines last year when two female K-pop stars killed themselves after facing online attacks.

- WWE started using NXT wrestlers as fans on the 5/25 tapings.
It made for a far improved atmosphere at the shows. The delay in doing so after AEW’s atmosphere had been noted universally as being superior likely came because the company didn’t want to come across as copying AEW. This is the same reason why it took them weeks to move the position of the hard camera to facing the entrance ramp instead of to the side facing empty stands.2
They had to stand up and cheer for just under seven hours of television, a Raw and a Smackdown, as well as Main Event and 205 Live. We were told the actual process of all the taping lasted for about 12 hours on 5/25 and a similar length on 5/26. A number of talents noted losing their voices on the first day from making so much noise for so long, not to mention the obvious exhaustion from such a process. Talent was allowed to sit down between matches and it kind of makes no sense why chairs weren’t provided given how much time was being spent taping.
At ringside they had plexiglass walls which may become the new norm going forward with the idea of keeping fans from touching wrestlers.
Among the names as fans were Matt Martel, Chase Parker, Daniel Vidot, Rik Bugez, Big Boa, Shotzi Blackheart, Malcolm Bivens, Kayden Carter, Marina Shafir, Jessamyn Duke (who was shown over and over from where she was standing), Aliyah, Simone Johnson (Dwayne’s daughter who was shown in a close up at the start of the show), Rita Reis, Cal Bloom, Gurvinder Singh, Briana Brady, Zacariah Smith, Isaiah Scott, Jessi Kamea, Kacy Catanzaro, Emily Andzulis, Rinku, Saurav, Karen Q, Laxmi Kant Rajpoot, Sidney King, A.J. Francis, Santana Garrett, and a few others.
The term the company used for fans on the broadcast was “The PC prospects,” even though some were obviously recognizable from stints on NXT television and a few were long-time veterans of the industry. It helped the show a lot.
Although it was hinted on the air that they were testing all talent for COVID-19, there was no testing done at all again at the tapings this past week past temperature readings and asking people if they didn’t feel well.
- Peyton Royce has been out of action with an undisclosed injury in recent weeks. Billie Kay has been working the brunt of their matches, and notably the Iiconics have been kept limited during in-ring performances aided by their association with Charlotte Flair.
- On the topic, there is an idea that appears to have started playing out on the television that Charlotte Flair and the Iiconics group will wind up leading to a new Four Horsemen. While this has been teased before, and the original group of women who came up through developmental (Flair, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks and Bayley) were marketed as the Four Horsewomen, this is an idea that was reportedly pitched by her father Ric Flair. Whether this leads to Flair taking up a new on-screen role full-time, at his age (he turned 71 in February), remains to be seen. It comes just over a year after the breakdown of an idea involving the Four Horsewomen of MMA (Ronda Rousey, Marina Shafir, Jessamyn Duke and Shayna Baszler) feuding with WWE's Horsewomen. Baszler currently is working on the RAW Brand with Charlotte (who one would figure to return to RAW after her NXT run concludes), whereas Duke and Shafir continue to train in NXT with sparing TV appearances.
- Kurt Angle's appearance on SmackDown on 5/25 spans from he and WWE agreeing to come to terms on a new deal. With the corona virus continuing to have effects on the industry, the company is currently looking to downsize their budget (which explains the April roster cuts and the hopes of pre-taping as much content as possible). Overall it seems like they are cutting corners in costs where possible, which is proving to be widely unpopular for a company looking to celebrate its' highest quarter in the upcoming earnings call. Despite all the pub surrounding his last match and subsequent retirement at WrestleMania in 2019, there is an idea for a comeback match next year (though one would think they will wait until fans can return to arenas).
- The reason Nigel McGuinness hasn’t been around is that he was one of the people furloughed during all the cuts.
