Welcome to the 14th installment of the No Smark Zone brought to you by the law offices of Dewie, Cheatum, and Howe. Sorry if that’s a little lame but I just heard that joke for the first time in a long time and I couldn’t stop laughing. Anyway, on tap for today we have another installment of “I’m Not Buying Itâ€. We will also FINALLY get around to the request from Soulpower from a few weeks back and I will talk about C.M. Punk. And finally we will have some Great American Bash predictions. Ok? Ready? Then lets get Blue in here!
C.M. Punk
The number one soul brutha asked me to talk about this next subject. In one of my earlier columns, I gave my thoughts on the fastest rising star in the WWE, Ken Kennedy. Today I give my thoughts on perhaps the slowest rising star in the WWE, CM Punk.
Now let me get this out of the way, I hate straight edge people. It’s not because they don’t drink, have promiscuous sex, do drugs, or even in some cases eat red meat. I hate them because almost all of the sXe people I run into rub it in peoples faces that they don’t do those things and they are so much healthier, stronger, and more whatever because they are sXe. It’s complete bullshit and I fucking hate that.
Now onto the actual wrestler, CM Punk. I don’t know if he actually lives the sXe lifestyle and if he doesn’t, good for him. He is cashing in on a very niche group who really haven’t been targeted before in wrestling or in many other parts of the entertainment industry. For Punk I am going to do a simple “positives†and “negatives†analysis because I am too lazy to do it any other way at the moment.
On the negative side, he is relatively small. At 6ft 1in and 220 lbs I’m surprised the WWE didn’t throw in straight into the cruiserweight division to give it a jolt it sorely needed then and needs now. He also had some credibility coming into the WWE. Now some may take this as a positive but sometimes I get the feeling that if Vince doesn’t feel he has “created†something that it might not go as far as it can go. The gimmick he uses is very conducive to drawing “heatâ€. I mean really, why would you want to cheer for a guy who is constantly saying he is better than you because of his lifestyle. To be fair, the WWE have toned it WAY DOWN since his debut, but it still irks me. Unfortunately, he’s also not very good on the mic either. He has a pretty high pitched sounding voice, not as bad as the current ECW champ, but enough to notice. He still looks kinda timid on the mic. Finally, he seems to operate with reckless abandon. This might be a good attitude to have in some areas, but when it comes to getting in the ring, you need to be in total control. Look what happened when another young star went for a shooting star press because he just wanted to “go for it.â€
On the upside, Punk has a lot of great moves in his arsenal and he cal pull off to perfection. His running knee/bulldog combo is one of my particular favorites. He is very versed in submission wrestling thanks to time over in Japan and knows how to use it very well and when it seems right in a match and I really love submission wrestling. Before this whole shit storm happened, I was really looking forward to seeing CM Punk and Benoit hook it up. I really believe that if he got some training and ring time with a guy like Benoit, his game would have been upped anywhere from 1 to 10 fold. The man also clearly has an understanding of ring psychology as well as he is pretty good at selling for someone in his stage. I’m not sure if he has the “look†or not. I think it’s very debatable. He does have a nice face and is obviously in good shape, but something about his eyes tells me he doesn’t have the “look†yet. I believe that “the look†is very much a physical thing and is a little mental as well.
Soulpower asked “How far can he go?†I believe at this point it is too hard to tell. He COULD become WWE Champ. Do I see it happening? Probably not at this point. For now I see him as a solid mid carder/upper mid carder for the WWE for years to come and maybe he can break through. I didn’t think Edge would ever get to the main event when I first saw him, but I was wrong. If CM Punk does make it, he’s gonna have to take the Edge route. He’s gonna have to work hard, impress a lot of people, and get a little lucky as well. He’s also going to have to give it a lot of time.
Great American Bash Predictions
The WCW turned WWE summer classic The Great American bash is coming up this Sunday. It is the second of the tri-branded PPVs and it was looking to do very well until Edge got injured. Now that that has happened, I have no idea how it will turn out. The SD main event has sort of evolved into a clusterfuck of sorts which I think might actually hurt the PPV. But I’ll get on that later. Before I start, I just want to say that if you don’t want to know about the winner of the WHC Battle Royal on SD this week, STOP READING NOW!!! DO NOT GO FURTHER!!! Ok? Everyone still here? Good, now lets get to it….
Umaga© vs. Jeff Hardy for the Intercontinental Championship
This, in my opinion, is the ideal choice for an opener as Jeff always gets the crowd going and while the match certainly wont be fast paced, it wont be as technical and drawn out as Matt Hardy vs. MVP. File this match under “thrown togetherâ€. I was afraid this was going to happen when the WWE decided to do tri-branded PPVs. Then again they just got the belt back on Umaga (thank god) so I guess there wasn’t much time to build up to the match. I don’t mind seeing these two go at it again as it is a classic monster heel vs. good guy story that is likely to take place. Well, I shouldn’t say “likelyâ€. What is likely to happen is that Jeff is going to be fed to Umaga to get his credibility back up again. Not that I necessarily mind it, because Raw is in dire need of a strong, over-bearing heel and I sure as shit don’t want it to be Snitsky. The match quality, if given enough time and proper booking, should be good to great. But we shall see.
Winner: Umaga
MVP© vs. Matt Hardy for the United States Championship
Since you could hear crickets chirping for the last CM Punk/Nitro match, I think this will be the second one out of the gate. Matt Hardy and MVP have had a pretty good feud thus far and I really hope this isn’t the payoff match. I have heard some people calling for Matt Hardy to win the US title and have MVP step up to the main event scene. I don’t think the Scene needs another heel, I think it needs another face, like Matt Hardy. Matt Hardy could be used as fodder to make Khali look like the monster/freak that he is. That is what I would have done if I was the WWE. But I will take this match anyway. This is going to be the show stealer, and I am calling it now. When these guys go on all cylinders they are the two men on Smackdown who will give you a 4 star match up each night. Put them in a match together (like we had a few weeks ago) and you get the match of the night. But I don’t see either one of these guys stepping up to the main event scene and I don’t see either one of these guys feuding with a anyone else for the time being, so don’t look for MVP to drop the belt and look for the feud to continue. Hey, I just had a great thought, what if we had an inter-promotional tag team match at Summerslam? The Hardy Boys vs. Umaga and MVP. I would DEFINITELY pay to see that shit!
Winner: MVP
John Morrison© vs. CM Punk for the ECW World Title
Ok I have to say that I am a big fan of Morrison (Nitro) and while I do think this gimmick is good and will work, I don’t like the name. Yeah, he looks like Jim, but still “Johnny Nitro†just has a better ring to it. It’s more catchy. But none the less, these two are going to give us a solid match, as they always do whenever they get into the ring. But I think they are going to have to top their bout at Vengeance if they want to impress. I mean it was a good match and all but it wasn’t anything to write home about. Like one of my favorite columnists said during his GAB preview, this isn’t a “do or die†moment for these two or ECW but they really need to throw it into another gear if either of them expect their push to last much longer than a few months. I think Nitro, sorry Morrison, has stepped up a little. His promos have gotten better and his match with Tommy Dreamer was the first time since RVD/Lashley that I went WOW at a match on ECW TV. I an fully confident that Punk can step it up as well so no worries there either. As for the winner, I have to give it to Johnny. He just got a new gimmick and I think that having someone that arrogant chase a title isn’t a very good idea.
Winner: John Morrison
“The American Dream†Dusty Rhodes vs. “The Legend Killer†Randy Orton in a Texas Bullrope Match
Ok, I am all for getting a guy over as a heel. I am even all for a guy using a “legend†to get him over. I mean Orton is the “Legend Killer†(a phrase first used in wrestling by the guy his daddy used to protect, think about that) and he should be beating the shiat out of legends. But why Dusty Rhodes? The guy is so far past his prime its not even funny. And I know the WWE cant go to the Ric Flair well because he is over on SD. But why not some other legend? Why Dusty? Anyway this match is gonna have to be a 10 on the brutality scale for it to get over and I don’t know how willing old Dust is to bleed like he used to. I honestly don’t have very high hopes for this match but I am certain of one thing. Randy Orton will win. I bet 72,000+ in Vcash on it!
Winner: Randy Orton
Candice Michelle© vs. Melina for the WWE Women’s Championship
Why this match is on the card over two tag team championships and a cruiserweight championship, I’ll never know. But here it is, Melina vs. Candice. I have no idea why the WWE took the belt from Melina to begin with but I don’t see Candice really doing much with it. I don’t know if that’s how it is being booked or what. This is another match I don’t have particularly high hopes for. Then again it’s a woman’s match and Trish isn’t in it. It’s almost guaranteed to be only average.
Winner: Candice Michelle
The Great Khali© vs. Batista vs. Kane in a triple threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship
Oh boy if any match ever had “clusterfuck†written all over it, it’s this one. Good lord what were the WWE thinking when they put the belt on Khali. I mean couldn’t they have had someone come over from Raw? The only thing Khali brings to the table is size. Yeah, he’s a big guy. The biggest guy to be so dominant since Andre. But he has not one lick of wrestling skill or promo ability. And that is what is going to hurt this match. Kane vs. Batista would be great all on its own. Kane has an uncanny ability to have these great matches with big men. But I don’t now if he can do it with Khali AND Batista. The addition of a 3rd man might make it good but I don’t know. I have my doubts. But the bottom line is this, Khali needs to step it up, NOW. He doesn’t have the luxury that Punk and Morrison have. He holds one of the most valuable titles in the history of the sport and if he doesn’t do well by it, his career is over. It should have been before it began, but that’s another story. As far as a winner goes, I don’t see the WWE taking the title off a guy they just gave it to so the biggest big man gets the win.
Winner: The Great Khali
John Cena© vs. Bobby Lashley for the WWE Title
Well the WWE have tried to bill this as Hogan/Warrior 2. Only these two men completely surpass both of those guys in ring quality. Unlike the HBK/Cena feud a heel turn has bee teased from both sides here and I like that. It not only keeps it interesting, but it keeps you thinking. This is going to be another tell tale moment in the career of John Cena. He has had the WWE Title longer than his predecessor JBL and now he is facing a person who hasn’t been in the big dance yet. (I say big dance because the ECW Title isn’t a world Title to me). He has to show that he can work with someone who isn’t a vet like HHH or HBK. Sure he worked well with Edge but he isn’t exactly a ring general like the other two. His matches with Umaga really showed he knows how to go in there and work a match. And no, I don’t mean using 500 fucking moves. Using moves has nothing to do with “working†a match. Working has to do with crowd psychology and getting into the heads and hearts of the people. And Cena has become very good at doing that. With the inexperience of Bobby boy I believe that is going to play a major role on how this match comes off. To Lashley’s credit, he is a very sound, crisp wrestler, something that Cena is admittedly not. And that’s fine. Not everyone needs to be a guy who can shoot at a guy and take him down in less than a second like Lashley can. And I don’t care what Ric Flair or anyone else says, Bobby Lashley has Cena beat in the strength department. There is no way, Cena can even come close, as big as Cena is. In the end, this match will NOT end like WM 6 and Cena will retain the title and probably end up defending the title in yet another multi-man match at Summerslam.
Winner: John Cena
That’s it for the predictions. I don’t see this being a great PPV by any means, but I don’t see it being bad at all either. Another middle of the road PPV by the WWE. I am really starting to rethink my position on the tri-branded PPVs though. If they don’t start delivering soon, it’s gonna fail for the WWE.
I’m Not Buying It
To close out this edition of the No Smark Zone we have what is slowly becoming one of my favorite segments to write. Don’t ask me why. I guess it’s because of my largely pessimistic nature.
Tri-Branded PPVs: Remember I said I was rethinking it? Well I rethought it and I think they are a bad idea. They are supposed to help the WWE produce the best matches possible per PPV. But how can you have the best matches when you have no tag teams, no cruiserweights, along with guys the likes of Ric Flair, Ken Kennedy, and Booker T all on the sideline? Does that sound like they are getting the best out there? Hell no. They need to either find a way to get more people on a card or just end it, now.
Dusty Rhodes’ Comeback: With literally dozens of other legends the WWE could trot out, why this guy? Sure he is great on the stick, though if you heard his commentary on WCW TV you might disagree, but that’s not a reason to give him a match. If you wanna feed someone to Orton, throw some money at The Rock? How about The Million Dollar Man? I bet Ricky Steamboat could get out one more match. I just don’t like the idea of Dusty coming back for even a match. As a manager, fine. But let his legacy rest in peace.
The Great Khali as Champion: Bad idea. Bad idea. BAD….FUCKING….IDEA!! Sure, they want a heel to be the champ on SD, that’s great. Turn Batista heel. Bring over Kennedy or Booker. Turn Kane heel. Turn Ric Flair heel. BUT DO NOT GIVE KHALI THE TITLE!! The only reason, and I mean the ONLY reason he has that belt now is because he’s so damn big. It’s the same reason he still has a job. That is the only good thing Khali brings to the table. The guy is so big, who can you get to defeat him? In all seriousness? He even DWARFS Batista and The Undertaker! What the fuck!? How can you beat something like that? That’s it. That’s all he brings. Otherwise he is completely worthless as a wrestler and has no business in the business.
Ok now that I got that out of my system it’s time to say goodbye. Thanks for reading and don’t forget to leave comments!! Also go check out Soulpowers latest ECW Review and PeepShows TNA PPV Review. Normally I don’t plug anything TNA in my column because I cant stand the product, however PeepShow worked hard on it so check it out. Also, don’t forget to check out my Smackdown Reviews. The next one is slated to be up Friday Night/Saturday Morning. Until next week, catch you on the flipside!
