Around eight years ago there was a huge umbrella tree in our backyard and we decided to cut it down. We left a good sized stump there, about 5 feet tall, and just allowed it to sit there as it actually looked quite good.
Then two weeks back we decided that it was time to get rid of it as it had started to dry out and just looked ugly. When we cut into it we found out that there were termites inside! We had it treated and removed and then had the house checked but thankfully they hadn't reached the house. We decided to get the house protected though and it is being treated today. It was a big shock when we had them in the tree and really didn't think about protecting the house from them until we actually had them.
We told our neighbours as soon as we found out we had termites so that they would know and could check out any stumps or dead wood left around. Then we find out from one of our neighbours that they had termites in a sleeper a year ago but they never told us! We couldn't believe that they would have termites yet not bother to inform the surrounding neighbours as a common courtesy.
