It’s really late, and I only caught a glimpse of Smackdown. So, this will be short, but it will be heavy in Christian content.
You’ve all seen the hills that Christians character has undergone. He started off as that face in peril trying to live on Edge’s legacy by capturing the World Heavyweight Championship. No more than 48 hours later, and he dropped the belt. You were outraged, I was outraged, moms were outraged, grandpas were outraged. It goes on and on.
What we all failed to see, though, is what truly lies behind this. Sure, he dropped the title to Orton right away, but is it that bad of a move, really?
Feel me out here. I stated last week that maybe, just maybe the WWE was planning to put Christian back to the mid-card at the conclusion of his re-match. Then it happened. WWE fans from all over stormed to WWE’s social networks and they were irate! They let Vince and co. know that they were not happy about the decision to take the belt off of Orton so quickly. Randall even got stormed with hate mail. It opened the eyes of creative and they realized that they would be making the wrong decision to just remove Christian from the main event. There was so much more for them to accomplish by pushing Christian to the top.
Then it hit me. Maybe they weren’t actually planning to remove Christian from the top. Maybe, just maybe, they were trying to give Christian a better chance at succeeding. Letting him do it his own way.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m a HUGE Christian fan. He is without a doubt my favorite superstar in the WWE today. But, there is no doubt that no matter how long he held that strap he would be labeled as the WWE’s answer to Edge’s retirement. He’d be called the Edge-lite. If you disagree with that statement then you are an idiot.
You see, now that Christian no longer has the title, it gives him a chance to build himself up over a period of months and re-capture the belt. I mean, he was pretty much thrust into the title match and given about two weeks to build himself up. To tell you the truth, it was done in the most shitty way possible, but they did what they could with the cards they got dealt. It’s in no way creative’s fault. Sure, they could have planned a little more accordingly if they thought there was a possibility of Edge’s forced retirement, but you that’s like living in fear of everything. It’s a waste of time.
The thing is, though, it’s hard to tell just where his character is headed. Common sense tells ya that it’s building to a heel turn. I know it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he gets buried by Orton at Over the Limit. That would be a wonderful chance for them to have him snap and thus turn heel.
That’s the most likely scenario to play out given WWE’s track record with Orton.
I just feel like there kind of building both Orton and Christian up to see who gets the better face reaction, and who has the more heel friendly reactions. A couple of weeks ago, I would have never said this, but I legitimately think there’s a chance of Orton turning. I only say that since the creative team was SHOCKED to see Orton getting hated on after the infamous “SpoilerGate”.
As always, though, who knows? At this time it’s a great time to be a fan of Smackdown. There’s so much uncertainty in the main event scene right now. You don’t know what’s going to happen. And, I might just be the only one who thinks this, but I really am enjoying the hell out of the Jinder Mahal-Great Khali confrontations. It’s probably the first time I’ve ever enjoyed something of Khali’s!
My only complain with Smackdown remains the same. It’s a taped show that airs on Friday. First of all, I’m ALWAYS busy on Fridays, or I just plain out forget that it’s on, and watch something else. Secondly, it’s a taped fucking show. No matter how hard you try when you are a member of the IWC, spoilers will ALWAYS make there way to you. I was attempting to boycott the spoilers last week so I could get an unspoiled view of Christian’s first show as World Heavyweight Champion, yet I didn’t make it more than an hour after Smackdown’s tapings concluded before my e-mail was bombarded with questions on what I thought of what transpired with him. Then I sign into my Facebook, and my newsfeed is FILLED with “Orton’s the NEW WHW Champ”. Needless to say, I was more pissed that it was spoiled than I was of what actually happened.
Nevertheless, Christian’s character is going to be a very interesting subject to follow of the coming months. I’m mostly intrigued to see what path he takes after Over the Limit. We can rest assure that there is no chance of him retaining the belt. So, now all we need to know is, what’s next?
A Money in the Bank win later this summer is almost a guarantee from the way I look at it. But what is he going to do between now and then? Randall’s expected to be taken up with feud with Mark Henry soon, so you can’t expect another re-match. If he does turn heel, then there is little for him to do. Ezekiel Jackson is the next top face, as far as I know, that he could take on. Problem is, though, I expect Ezekiel to be tied up with other Corre related stuff in the coming months.
I guess that’s what makes it all the more interesting. There’s more for him to do as a face, while there’s more potential in him turning heel.
What do you fine folks think? Should he turn heel, or stay face? If he does turn heel, who do you think he should go up against? Do you think he should get another reign? Or do you think he sucks and needs to go to Superstars? Let me know via the comments section, or send it my way via e-mail! Until tomorrow, it’s me signing off, playa!
