If you guys caught tonight’s edition of WWE Superstars, you’d know that Michael Hayes has taken up an on screen role as a manger for Tyson Kidd. If you checked your favorite wrestling website and read recent news, you would have seen that Creative is entertaining the thought of reviving the role of manager.
I, for one, think that this is a fantastic idea. A lot of top wrestlers over the past few years have fell victim to not getting over because they can’t work the mic. Shelton Benjamin, and Charlie Haas are the ones glaring out to me. They had GREAT in-ring talent, but just didn’t know how to work magic on the mic. Those two could have been huge had they gotten a Jimmy Hart doin’ their talkin’.
With Tyson Kidd getting the nod for the first manager, it makes you wonder who could be next. First of all, I think it’s great that Kidd is getting the opportunity to fully succeed. At this point, if he doesn’t get over it’s purely his fault.
Back to my original point; who’s next to get a manager? Again, the first name that glares out at me is Shelton Benjamin. He had a dark match try-out not to long ago, and if the company was serious about bringing him back, they might as well go the extra length and give him a talker. Otherwise, he will just burn out within a year and be back on the future endeavors list. Therefore, if they want to give him a talker, I think Byron Saxton would be the best fit. Byron is wonderful on the mic, but doesn’t necessarily have the tools to make it as an in-ring competitor. Fitting these two together, in my opinion, would be HUGE! All of the depends on whether Shelton ever gets re-hired, though. And since It’s been damn near two or three months since his try-out, I doubt we’ll see him.
The only guy on Raw that would either need a manager, or even benefit from one, is Evan Bourne. No question they guys got talent, but he, much like Haas, just can’t work that mic. The only thing that has really saved him from getting fired is that he is pretty over with the kids. Without that I doubt he would have made it into 2011 on the WWE Roster. As for who should manage him, that’s a bit of a tougher problem. You can’t really stick somebody small with him and expect them to get over. What he would really need is a big badass enforcer type guy. BUT – he has to be great on the mic and serve as the manager. That alone, makes it tougher pinpointing somebody for him. They could always go the cheap route and assign somebody on creative to do the duties. But is there a big badass on creative? Who knows.
Over on Smackdown there is a big tough guy that recently turned face. He is in desperate need of somebody to do his talking, because when he talks it almost destroys the fact that he has 500lbs of pure muscle. That man is none other than my boy, Ezekiel Jackson. As you all know, I’m a big fan of his. That don’t change the fact that he’s going to need somebody doing his talking if he wants to get over and remain over without falling back into the future endeavors club. William Regal is the man that can help him. Only problem there is that William works better as a heel, but nevertheless, I’m confident he could get him over as a face. They worked together in the dying days of WWECW to, so it is not as if they’re not new to each other. Plus, it’ll get Regal back on the main roster doing work in the final days of his career. Who knows, maybe it’ll open the doors to possible serving an on-air role down the road once he finally hangs the boots up for good.
Daniel Bryan is somebody who needs a manager. Sadly, though, I don’t think one should be necessary. I think a heel turn and joining of former Nexus partners Wade Barrett, Heath Slater, and Justin Gabriel would be awesome. Throw in a returning Skip Sheffield, and Michael Tarver and you got yourself a true “New Nexus†Maybe they could handle stuff different this time. I’ll be honest Nexus’s actions last summer had my fandom at an all-time high. What happened after Skip Sheffield went down to injury, though, was horrible. It was handled all to wrong, and I believe WWE truly missed the boat on something stellar. They have the chance to do it better this time ‘round on Smackdown. Nexus was HOT last year, and there’s no reason why they couldn’t repeat that success this year, maybe even around the anniversary of the first attacks. Trust me it could be done fresh, and to perfection. I guess if that doesn’t formulize, they could always stick somebody like Chavo Guerroe on him.
The final pairing I have in mind already has the seeds planted to an extent. That’s right, once Michael Cole is done with his overblown feud with Jerry Lawler he needs to be kicked off of commentary, or stuck to Smackdown, and make appearances as none other than Jack Swagger’s mouthpiece. Michaels crazy over as a heel, and if he stays on the commentary team on Raw it would just be to awkward. The heat he magnitudes would really benefit Jack going forward. We all know Swagger has a lisp, and thus it hinders his promo abilities. Cole can solve all of that.
Alright, so those are my picks for who should get managers. What do you folks out there in ReaderLand think of them? Did I miss somebody you think should get one? Who do you think needs a manager most? Who do you think would be best fit AS a manager? Get at me people! Let me know what’s going through your mind on this subject.
Before I close, I just want to thank each and every one of you guys that spoke up and offered your ideas last night. The response was overwhelming, and I am VERY glad you liked the idea. Moving forward, I believe there will be around 15 parts to the series. Many different looks at different aspects, and what the WWE can do moving forward. Expect part one to the series if not Friday, then Saturday. Until then, though, go out and check out the latest issue of FightLife Magazine!
Until tomorrow, it’s your favorite spartan, Spartacus, signing out!
