Something that I've been thinking about for a while now is the character of "The Monster" Abyss. What do you think the character's about? What's it based on? Many people have compared it to a combination of "Kane" played by Glen Jacobs and "Mankind" played by Mick Foley. I think even Chris Parks himself has said that "Abyss" is basically a rip-off of those.

But I think TNA has turned it into something more. "Abyss" sort of reminds me of the monstrous prisoner in the movie "In Hell" with Jean-Claude Vann Damme. "Abyss's" entrance video shows him in an empty prison doing his signature cross-arms taunt.

But I've also firmly believed for a while now that water has something to do with "Abyss". Ever since I first downloaded his theme song "Down In The Catacombs" I thought that it sounded like water. If "Abyss" had never been in TNA, "Down In The Catacombs" could have been used as the first theme song of "Shark Boy". "Shark Boy's" TNA theme song is called "Eat Me" and of coruse is a rip-off of the theme from "Jaws". "Down In The Catacombs" was also used for various other people as well.

But enough about the theme music.

Keeping the music in mind however, I remember distinctly in 2004 on an episode of iMPACT! on FSN, they played a promotional video for "Abyss". A very quick and brief clip showed him rising out of the water of what looked like a fountain at Universal Studios at Universal Orlando Resort.

Back to the prison, they never did explain why "Abyss" was afraid of barbed wire during his feud with Sabu. It reminds me of something that could have happened at a prison.

So I've concluded that there are many missing factors and lots of missing information. However, what I've gathered is: that prison, barbed wire, and water all have something to do with his past.

Water is used just to be the opposite of "Kane" who of course is based in fire. Barbed wire and prison sounds like that movie I talked about, "In Hell" which is based on a true story.

Another thing that puzzles me is: how does "Abyss's" manager, Father James Mitchell, communicate with "The Monster" when they're not in the iMPACT! Zone?

So many questions.

So what do you guys think?

Abyss' character has been built up very well by TNA and at least they didnt destroy it when he became a face. He basically is an immate who Mitchell brought to TNA to be his "monster". He has had horrible things done to him in jail so thats why he wears a mask and acts all..weird. Well, thats my take on it, its really a great character and Abyss is easily the best big man in main stream wrestling today

I love his theme song btw. Its the best one in TNA

Abyss believe it or not is one of the most thought out successful stars in TNA history, eventhough he only had one short title reign, most superstars aren't defined by their runs, but by their character.

When Abyss was first created, it was obviously a rip-off of kane and mankind, but bit-by-bit, they actually created a genuine character and personality. Hopefully they don't destroy his character in this partnership with Sting

Good post...And yes he has become more than just Kane/Mankind.Hes become..........Well,Abyss...But still he has his own character/backstory/traits now. However Dylan his whole story is that he shot his dad 3 times in the back, putting him in a coma which he survived(his dad).He went to jail but it turned out that his mom was the actual one who did it(Mitchell said that this year when meeting with sting and abyss's mom)......So yah thats his character...I dontknow about the wholewater thing though...

Love the gimmick, he's been in so many great feuds over the years with guys like Raven, Monty Brown, Sabu, Jeff Hardy, Brother Runt, AJ Styles & Rhino... He is one of (if not) the biggest homegrown talent they have in the company along with AJ. This new phase he's going through now is worrying alot of people about the chance that his gimmick will turn into kane's (Stale) but i have a belife that this is just another chapter & he'll carry on being a major role in TNA. I hope he stays Face for a while longer & then turns Heel invoking a major Feud sometime in 2008 & maybe getting another short title run.

Yea, I Remember when I Ordered a TNA PPV in 2002 and Saw Abyss and immediately thought it was a kane/mankind ripoff. But slowly he began to develop into his own character, and i think he is one of the best TNA Originals with the company, he is one of my favorite wrestlers today and im extremely happy that his character wasn't destroyed when he turned face. Hopefully he will win the TNA world title or he and Sting will become TT champs
