I haven't even seen the first Smile but if they are getting a Sequel clearly they did some good things with the previous one.

I wouldn't apply that logic to horror films, they are cheap to make and easily profitable with the right buzz, no matter how bad they are (look at Saw 4 to 9 for example). With that said, the first Smile was alright, even though it was basically It Follows lite.
