GUITAR HERO SLASH COMES UP SMELLING OF ROSES
By Adam Cailler
Everybody has that moment when you know, you're witnessing history.
That moment came last Thursday at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham as legendary guitarist Slash took to the stage for a two-night tour of the UK.
With vocalist Miles Kennedy, they performed a mixture of new hits from the Apocalyptic Love album with classics from Slash's previous groups Guns 'n' Roses and Velvet Revolver <\!m> and the sell-out crowd at the Arena was in awe for more than two hours.
A lot of the evening felt very improvised as Slash seemed to go off script with a rendition of the theme from The Godfather lasting well over ten minutes, turning Anastasia from a great three minute song into an epic 15 minute guitar solo and slipping in a riff from the Jimi Hendrix's classic Voodoo Child to send the awestruck crowd into a frenzy.
There was definitely a feeling of appreciation for what was being witnessed from all over the arena with guests such as Megadeth guitarist David Ellefson and several Nottingham Forest players in attendance.
After playing for well over two hours, Miles and Slash ended the evening with a welcome surprise of Guns 'n' Roses songs Sweet Child of Mine, Welcome to the Jungle and the pièce de résistance of Paradise City with the added extra of confetti cannons.
Everything about the evening added to the legendary status that Slash holds in the music world, even down to the support act The Treatment, who were handpicked by Stoke-born Slash to warm up the crowd.
Playing around 30 minutes of what can only be described as British Hair Metal they evoked memories of Europe, Iron Maiden and a hint of Status Quo.
Miles, Slash and the Conspirators (Todd Kearns and Brent Fritz) won over many in the crowd who were wondering "What will Slash be like without Axl Rose?" to leave them asking "Axl who?" by the end of the evening.
