That supposed SimCity 5 trailer from this weekend turned out to be legit. Today EA announced that they're rebooting the city management series. The next game, simply called SimCity, will be released on the PC in 2013.
SimCity allows players to build up their own city from the ground up. They'll work to fulfill all of their citizens' needs, including power, water, and employment. They can choose to specialize their city in a single industry, such as tourism or manufacturing, in order to shape the look and personality of the area. Players will also need to protect their city's Sims against natural disasters.
The game also features a new multiplayer mode. Friends will be able to band together to create a region. You can help or harm each others' cities through your decisions. For example, you can help a city in the midst of a natural disaster by lending emergency vehicles. You can also make citizens of a neighboring city sick by producing too much pollution. Cities can also band together to accomplish lager goals, like launching a space shuttle.
Your city will also interact with the larger SimCity world beyond your region. You can assist with global challenges like lowering pollution in order to earn trophies. Leaderboards will let you know how you stack up against the world or your specific region.
"We’d like to thank the millions of fans who have helped make SimCity synonymous with the city-building genre. This is a franchise that means the world to us at Maxis and we’re happy to be bringing it back home where we are reimagining it for an entirely new generation of players," said Lucy Bradshaw, Senior Vice President of EA Maxis. “Using our proprietary GlassBox Engine, SimCity for PC will equip players with the tools to play the most sophisticated simulation of its kind. We are dedicated to making sure the experience – no matter the platform – has the fun, flavor and playability that has been intrinsic to the franchise since its birth."
SimCity is currently available for pre-order through Origin. The digital store is offering exclusive DLC that will allow you to add a super villain and super hero to the city. The $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition will provide you with British, French, and German city sets so you can recreate famous European locations like Paris or London.
