I think i might do this every week guys, and this week we go live! Well it's airing in Australia so all you Americans who don't want to have results spoiled, use your minds and don't read this yet. (but do eventually
)
Anyway, we start off the show with a nice JD video package of the main event, followed by Edge coming out to some nice heat. He goes on about the usual, calling himself the top guy in the WWE and calling Jeff Hardy a loser. Anyway, after running his mouth some more, Teddy Long comes out and announces that Edge won unfairly at JD and there will be an EXTREME rematch. (big shock I know) So then Edge protests only for Jeff to come out to a huge pop. Jeff proposes there be a match tonight to decide the stip and Edge disagrees for some reason. Hardy goes into the crowd to ask a few ugly people and whiny kids and Teddy eventually makes the match. We have a main event, and it looks to be a good one.
This promo was pretty good for the most part, Edge was what you would expect which is a good standard, Teddy Long was... black, and Hardy was alright for what you would expect. Going into the crowd was really unnecesary imo as we saw some real hideous people. Overall, it dragged in some parts. ***
Next up, we have a 6 man tag with John Morrison and Cryme Tyme taking on Ricky Ortiz and the possibly reformed World's Greatest Tag Team. Apparently Ortiz is heel now and I hate it when things like this come from nowhere, if anything this will make the fans more apathetic towards him. The match itself had some good tag work from the faces to start out and I'm surprised Cryme Tyme haven't got a tag title run with how gelled they are as a team. We come back from a break to see the heels dominating JTG (I hate it when the tide turns during the break) and apparently he got lulpwnt by WGTT during the commercial. Exciting. Anyway, as JTG goes for a tag it gets a bit awkward, as not only does he look like a fish flailing on dry land, but there is confusion as he 'tags' in Morrison and he runs in, when it was obvious no contact was made. Afterwards the ring is apparently a no-communication zone as it is awkwardly cleared leaving the two legal men Morrison and Haas, and JoMo~! wins with the Starship Pain, a move almost as epic as the SSP.
A good match here, not as good as last week's opener, but still soild action. The ending was very awkward but it continues to get Morrison over as a face, and he is doing so well. What I liked about this, was that here on SD they get a good 10 minutes of match time, while before the draft they would have struggled to appear on their respective TV shows. Good job Smackdown! **3/4
We go backstage where Melina is with... someone, and she cuts a generic promo on being the best diva on Smackdown and embracing all comers, she will prove herself and etcetera. it really picks up when Alicia Fox (and her hair) walks into the picture to tell Melina McCool is gonna win the title. Melina tells Foxx to tell Michelle 'not to send a little girl to do a Woman's job', *SLAP*~! Alicia holds her cheek as Melina glares semi-evilly, or maybe it's just the Mexican-ness.
This promo didn't do much for me until the end, where it showed me just how much Melina needs to be a heel. She is just a natural heel in ring and on the mic, and this proved that. Btw, I'll say this every week until she turns. Alicia was pretty hawt as well. **1/4
Now we have that very #1 Contendership match between Michelle McCool and Gail Kim. High powered opening with some nice counters and a quick pace but it slows down after McCool rams Kim feet first into the ringpost, which was a cool spot. McCool then works over the legs in the ring rather inconsistently, until Kim gets McCool in a rather nice (not so nice to look at) head scissors submission. FLYING DRAGON~! ASIAN POWAH~! Anyway, McCool escaped as apparently she is stronger than Beth now, but the action goes both ways (like a... never mind) and Kim hits a nice neckbreaker, which McCool uninspiringly kicks out of, probably tired from going all out on Taker last night. Anyway, there is the customary A.Foxx interference and Michelle nails the Faith Breaker, burying the formerly awesome move deeper into it's sloppy grave.
Both these divas are good enough in the ring to put on a good match, but McCool wasn't at her best tonight and her being occasionally sloppy dragged the match down. However, there were some OK spots and some nice action at times which carried this to a passable diva's match. Sadly, Kim is still being buried and McCool will go one on one with Melina, presumably to win and become the historical first woman to ever win both garba- I mean titles. Super duper. **1/4
After an ad break (JR: FUDGE MUFFINS!(BTB plug ppl, go read No Way Out (after reading the rest of this) >_>)) (wow brackets are annoying) we see that the WWE are coming to Australia. And on my birthday too! I would go if I wasn't so poor, lazy and socially outcasted.
This made me feel poor, lazy and socially outcasted. DUD >_>
Also, JR interviwes Rey Mysterio when they are both a few hundred metres from each other. The interview itself is alright for Rey, he interacts with the crowd well, and pushes that he will defend his title against anyone. He mentions Eddie who gets a more mixed reaction than you would think, but that would be due to people not respecting Rey probably. He goes on a bit about masks but there's really not that much else to point out.
Well this was a pretty boring promo, that would have worked better with the two guys in the same place. What Rey said was meh, he didn't really prove much but hopefully the title gets defended more and some young guys (Ziggler or Knoz) are allowed to win it sometime soon. **
We go to another break before seeing Chris Jericho make his entrance to a chorus of I wasn't listening. He is set to go one on one with CM Punk is a rematch from Superstars. Feud please. The match begins slower than you would expect, as the two guys go at it with some action that doesn't fall into the favor of either man, but there was a nice spot where Jericho missed that springboard dropkick and fell to the outside. After some more even action, we see Jericho take control. However, the apparently ambidextrous CM Punk manages to fight back into the match with his experienced legs, so take that how you want it. OMG TODD SAID BUZZSAW~! ASIAN POWAH~! Anyway, as we head into commercial Jericho gets the advantage back. Apparently during break Punk got the advantage but Jericho is in control once we return. Stoopid commercials. The even action continues, and from now on I wont even mantion change of momentum as it's happened at least 28.5 times so far. There's some nice action where Punk tries twice for the GTS only for Jericho to go for the Walls as the crowd mark. Eventually Punk gets the GTS and Jericho rolls out, cueing Umaga to run in with a strap! He wails on Punk with it before tieing him to the corner in a Tree of Woe, nailing him with an epic Samoan SPike in that position. And then... wait no... holy shit... holy FUCKING shit... Umaga grabs a MICROPHONE! He then speaks ENGLISH and challenges Punk to a Samoan Strap match at Extreme Rules, before finishing off with some more sick strap shots as we go to commercial.
This here was a very good match that had some nice near falls and reversals, showing me how good it would be if these two feuded and had some PPV matches. Punk gets put over by nailing the GTS at the end but the big story to come out of this match imo is Umaga talking, FUCKING talking. Sure he was a little raspy but he sounded monster like so it was very in charachter. The strap shots were brutal and the crowd were giving Umaga crazy heat for demolishing Punk. Strap match should be pretty awesome. The over all match/promo or segment was of very high quality. ***1/2
We then see Dolph Ziggler come out to hopefully have his push continued. Oh fuck. Oh shit. Oh fuckshitfuckshit. That... I don't wanna say the word so I'll just say WHAT'S UP! This better be a squash in the heel's favor. Anyway, 6-8 minutes and 2-3 distinguishable words of rap later, the match begins. Ziggler knocks Truth down and asks him What's Up. Pwnt. Anyway, I was talking to my parents about Raw tickets so I missed most of this match, and I wasn't talking to them for a while. Ziggler wins after some domination followed by his leaping reverse DDT. Khali walks (0.04 miles per hour) down the ramp and Ziggler bails. Really great feud this is.
This was thankfully a squash, and the best parts were that Ziggler won and Truth lost. Really not that much to say, except for how shit this makes Mike Knox look in comparison. Fuck consistency. *1/2
We come back from the break (boy these are getting old) to find a recap of the awesome Layla/Eve feud. Apparently they go one on one next week which should probably ruin the feud. Jericho is backstage and goes on to Teddy about how Rey is a coward and how he hides behind a mask. (he's got him there) He requests a match at JER which is almost too conveniently already made and it is No Holds Barred (also known as No Rules, Street Fight, Falls Count Anywhere, Hardcore and Street Fight). Well at least I hope Falls do count anywhere. Match should be good.
Alright Jericho promo as always but not much to say. I dread the divas match next week after several good angles in past weeks. Jericho and Rey should be good at Extreme Rules but I didn't catch whether it's a title match, though I assume so. **
We then see Jeff Hardy make his entrance for the Main Event before we go to break. This should be a good match and I have a BRAND NEW FUCKING 6 MINUTE COMMERCIAL [] to ponder it's potential greatness. Edge makes his entrance and his heat has returned afetr eluding him last week. I miss the opening moments through looking for food (why didn't I go in commercial?), but when I get back there Hardy has Edge in a headlock, going for a more ground based attack as JR said, before nailing his signature corner dropkick as we... *shudders*. We go to commercial. Back and the crowd is still heavily in this match, as there is no clear advantage. Edge catches Hardy in the corner but as with any Hardy corner spot, it ends with a particularly sloppy Whisper in the Wind, which was basically back to shoulder contact. Ouch? Edge reverses the double crotch leg drop later on in the exact same way as JD and in the video package we saw tonight. Originality ftw. Edge stays in control for a while after this until he jumps off the top rope into a dropkick from hardy, before being taken to the outside with a baseball slide and then jumped on. Pretty standard Jeff stuff here. Jeff then nails Matt's leg drop for a nice near fall moments later. Edge then reverses a TOF only for Hardy to reverse a Spear into a Sunset Flip for a very good near fall. Hardy then reverses the Edegcution into a Twist of Fate in another good spot but Edge recovers before the Swanton. Edge treis to relive JD with the Edgecution off the top but he is knocked off and Jeff nails him with an EXTREME~!~!~! Swanton for the clean win. Post match, Todd asks Jeff what stipulation he chooses for Extreme Rules (I bet Ladder or TLC) and Jeff announced he will not be sweeping floors (WTF?) and THEN announces that he has chosen a ladder match! Epicness!
Wow, this was a very competitive match from the get go with both men being fired up. There were some great spots and counters in between things that lead to some nice near falls, but all in all it was only really standard stuff from both men. The end sequence was very nice with Edge trying to repeat Judgment Day only to be hit with the Swanton. The announcement of the Ladder match is very cool as both men excel in that field, and I'm only just a little bitter tables and chairs weren't added. Good main event, and this adds the unpredictability to Extreme Rules as they are 1 all, but if I'm not mistaken Edge has never lost a match with ladders. ***1/2
*******1/2- All in all, this week's Smackdown was very nice and better than last week, with two great matches and two solid matches, as well as a few OK promos. Good to see this great standard kept up.
Anyway, we start off the show with a nice JD video package of the main event, followed by Edge coming out to some nice heat. He goes on about the usual, calling himself the top guy in the WWE and calling Jeff Hardy a loser.
