Sam Raimi will produce Poltergeist remake
Evil Dead director returns to horror once more

MGM seems to have vintage horror on the brain. Not only is the studio embarking upon a remake of the seminal Stephen King story, Carrie, but another reboot is in the offing in the form of paranormal fright-fest Poltergeist.

The original movie was directed by Tobe Hooper from a script co-written by Steven Spielberg, in which a family finds themselves terrorised by a group of malevolent spirits when they discover that their home is built upon an ancient burial ground.

Sam Raimi had long been rumoured to be the studio's pick to direct the project, but The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that the Evil Dead mastermind will instead be on production duties.

The script is currently being put together by David Lindsay-Abaire, a former Raimi collaborator on Disney's Oz: The Great And Powerful, who previously won a Pulitzer for his work on the stage version of Rabbit Hole, a play he would go on to adapt for the big screen.

The film is very much in the planning stages at this point, with a director expected to be announced in the coming months. And regardless of whether you think the movie needs a remake in the first place, it's good to know that MGM have got a bona fide horrorphile on the case...
