Ronny Markes signs with WSOF, returning to light heavyweight
Brazilian veteran Ronny Markes (14-3) is heading to the WSOF, and he’ll do so as a light heavyweight.
Globo first reported the signing, and MMAjunkie subsequently confirmed the deal with WSOF officials, who also said the former middleweight will make the move to 205 pounds in his new promotion.
The 26-year-old Markes, a Nova Uniao fighter, started his career as a light heavyweight but in 2012 made the move down to 185 pounds. He opened his time in the division with wins over Andrew Craig and Aaron Simpson but would later lose to Yoel Romero and Thiago Santos.
In the bout with Santos, which took place in March, Markes was only able to cut down to 190 pounds, and the bout was contested as a catchweight affair. Adding to the disappointment for Markes, he was caught with a liver shot early in the bout and suffered a TKO loss.
Markes was released from the promotion after the result.
Despite the recent skid, Markes certainly has a respectable upside. He was 12-1 in his 13 fights as a light heavyweight, with nine of this victories coming by way of finish.
