Now its fairly well known his contract is up in a few months. Its also well known he is injury prone and barely seen on tv at times because of this. Yet Mysterio is still a fairly big name can sell merchandise and is popular in the hispanic market.

This leads to my point surely WWE would be sensible to renew Rey's contract even if it was in a non wrestling capability pretty much just to keep him around for his name?

Agree completly, just his merch alone is reason to resign. Kids eat that shit up so I would if it was me

His merch alone is one big reason to keep him signed, but I struggle to think of an appropriate role for him if he weren't wrestling. He doesn't strike me as the manager type, though it might work if he were mentoring some other cruiserweight or luchadore, but who would that be exactly? Sin Cara? Del Sol? Neither of those guys need it. He could always work as a backstage agent, though it's kind of strange to still sell his merch if he never regularly appears on-screen anymore.

Best case scenario, they resign him to a new contract (maybe a short term deal, like a year or two since he can't much more left in the tank with his injuries) but stick him in what is more or less a permanent tag team (until the time comes for him to retire in his final match) to limit the amount of work he has to do himself in the ring.

I can see Rey giving us one or two big matches a year. He could appear at Summerslam or Survivor Series for a big tag team match. I've always enjoyed Rey in certain environments, like a traditional Survivor Series match; thus, having him return for this kind of thing once or twice a year would work fine.

Do you really need to have Rey Mysterio around to sell his masks to kids? Legitimate question. Also, just move in more Sin Cara masks in place of Rey masks in the merch shop. Mission accomplished.

Bottom line: he isn't needed around for anything. He is useless at this stage in his career, and has been for at least 3-4 years now.

In reality, no, you don't need Mysterio around to sell his masks. Would sales be higher if he was around? Most likely, but you never really know.

I don't think this will work that easily. Like it or not, Rey is bigger with the WWE fanbase so it's not as simple as putting Sin Cara's masks in his place. If WWE builds Sin Cara a lot more then it's possible for this to work, but you're acting like just because they're both Hispanic and wear masks, it's a simple swap for fans. Not always the case.

Rey isn't completely useless. Stale, yes, he's become very stale. But letting him make the occasional Summerslam or Survivor Series appearance wouldn't be that bad.
