If Vince McMahon was still in power, there's a good chance that he might not be pushed as a top guy.

WrestleVotes reported today that after Gunther appeared on the 7/4 episode of Monday Night Raw, those in power (McMahon, at the time) soured on him for some reason and there were plans to bury him on TV.

On the 7/4 episode of Raw, R-Truth made his way out to the ring for an Independence Day skit. Gunther interrupted and then beat Truth in a match. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with Gunther's performance but the powers that be in WWE at the time apparently saw things differently.

WrestleVotes tweet states the following:

"Following his appearance on RAW on 7/4, those in power at the time really soured on Gunther for whatever ridiculous reason. To the point where a burial on TV was coming. Just a month later and quite the difference…"

Gunther is now being presented as a top-tier star. Last night on SmackDown, they pushed the Intercontinental Title as a title that should be respected and Gunther's IC Title match against Shinsuke Nakamura was saved for the main event spot on the show.
Calling BS on this one but posting it anyway because why not.

Yeah I remember there being a Fightful report of all the higher ups loving him, doesn't really make sense but I don't really remember the timeline. I guess theoretically that Truth segment coulda soured him with Vince but it didn't seem like it to me

Yeah I don’t believe this one either. WALTER has been pushed as a top guy since day 1; even under Vince’s control.

Only plausible validity I could see coming from this is maybe WALTER was a little too snug with Truth and he said something since him and Vince are boys. But Truth doesn’t come off as that type of dude.

Smells like BS

I mean it's Vince. It could easily be true and Gunther wasn't really on the fast lane to big things at that point.

LOL I can write these blatant lies too.

"Vince soured on so and so because.....reasons".

You know I'm actually surprised Vince agreed with pushing Walter like he has been since he joined the company. I always thought he would hate his looks.

He changed his body. Got into the type of shape that Vince loves

Well yeah it's pretty hard to miss.
But I'm talking about his run in NXT UK and his first months in NXT before he got in better shape. And his face too. I absolutely love Walter as a wrestler but he doesn't exactly look like Roman or Theory. That's why I wouldn't be surprised if Vince didn't like him

Again Vince was pushing him before he was out. Not like Hunter got in charge and WALTER became IC Champ

WALTER is actually the Vince prototype; he just didn’t want to move

Back to my first post there. It always surprised me because I didn't see Walter as the type of superstar Vince would push. I thought it was all HHH's doing.

Vince is not all there at this point. He doesn't need a reason to randomly bury someone

Usually I'd say this doesn't track BUT he did try to pull the plug on MMM which was his idea simply because he suddenly decided he didn't like how one of the performers said the lines. So there is a possibility he suddenly woke up not liking Gunther. What's the source on this report?

I'd be extremely surprised if Vince even knew NXT UK was still a thing tbh, let alone decide any booking decisions for it. Also when you think about it, an in shape 6 foot 4, foreign heel Gunther is most certainly something he would take a liking to.
