Even though rookie quarterback Brady Quinn has had a solid preseason, Browns general manager Phil Savage said Saturday night that the Notre Dame product won't be leading the Cleveland offense in their opener on Sept. 9.

Brady Quinn is a combined 20-of-31 for 236 yards with three TDs and no interceptions in two preseason games.

"It's unrealistic for Brady to be in the mix for the opener," Savage told the News Herald newspaper after the first quarter of Saturday night's preseason win over the Broncos.

With Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson believed to be the front-runners to start the season, Quinn has been doing his best this preseason to make that decision difficult for his bosses.

Quinn was efficient and effective for the second straight preseason game Saturday night. He completed 7-of-11 passes for 81 yards and one touchdown.

After missing 11 days in a contract holdout, Quinn is a combined 20-of-31 for 236 yards with three TDs and no interceptions over two games, albeit mostly against backups.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel has said he might not name a starting quarterback until the week before the opener vs. Pittsburgh.

Against the Broncos, Quinn threw a pass in the left flat that Joshua Cribbs turned into a nifty 20-yard touchdown to break a 10-10 tie in the third quarter, but the rookie was robbed of another apparent TD toss on Cleveland's previous possession.

Although Joe Jurevicius hauled in Quinn's perfectly thrown 39-yard pass over Dre' Bly in the end zone, the nearest official ruled he didn't get both feet down before going out of bounds -- replays showed otherwise, but Crennel didn't challenge the call.

"That's a call that maybe if it's the regular season we challenge it," Jurevicius said. "I'm not too worried about it. I think Brady made a great decision coming outside [the receiver's left shoulder] and doing something that was out of the ordinary."

Although "I thought the ball was pretty much on time where it was supposed to be, the throw could have been a little better for Joe to make it easier on him," Quinn said.

That came against Denver's frontline defense, too -- although that may not be as impressive as it sounds. Slow to adapt to new boss Jim Bates' scheme, the Broncos' starters have allowed six touchdowns and three field goals in 15 possessions this preseason.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Wow, it seems like the news are trying to say everything they can to not get Brady to be the starter. I just dont get it.

What a load of shit. Like I said, everyone just doesnt like him and doesnt want him to strat, just b/c he held out of camp for like 2 weeks. For the last time, FUCK THE MEDIA

Thoughts.....?

He shouldn't sstart just yet. If you let him sit on the bench for a season first and just concentrate on learning, he might become better in the long run. Plus, right now, he isn't that much better than the other two quarterbacks.

Passer ratings this preseason:

Derek Anderson: 67.1
Charlie Frye: 76.6
Brady Quinn: 119.8
Ken Dorsey: 90.0

Hmmmm, Id say thats quite a bit of a difference to me...

The preseason ratings don't tell the full story. Are you saying that putting him there will get the Browns to the playoff, while using any of the other quarterbacks won't? No I don't think so. It might be the most important position in the game, but that doesn't mean it will instantly make losers winners. Frye have started before, so experience must mean something. I know how you have a thing for Quinn, peep, but honestly if he suffers a major injury in the first season, you'll be regretting your decision supporting him to start.

^No, injuries are injuries. They happen to everyone. Im just sayin that I think Quinn can take them farther than eother of the other 3 can, maybe not to the playoffs, but hey, maybe 6 wins? I mean, I think he can take them just as far, and I guess I dont see why you draft a guy as you "franchise QB" then dont play him if hes clearly the best available option

Thats cause he has more to learn. He's not perfect like you think he is. Look what happened to Eli when they started him so soon. He was supposed to have a brigh future but now the team is actually doubtful if he's the one to lead the team. Thats why Quinn should not start until at least the sixth game. The they could consider starting him.

Five of his team's first 10 games — including three of the first four — are against AFC North rivals, and another season without marked improvement could lead to his firing.

Report: Quinn won't start Week 1

Camp battles: Who'll lead Browns?

Nobody has to remind Cleveland's Romeo Crennel of the importance of making the right choice at quarterback entering the Sept. 9 season opener against Pittsburgh.

The decision is among the toughest Crennel has had to make since becoming Browns head coach in 2005.

There is heavy local pressure to name rookie Brady Quinn the starter based on how well he has performed in two preseason games, especially compared to the generally non-descript efforts of turnover-prone teammates Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson.

It goes beyond Quinn's gaudy passing statistics (20-of-31 for 236 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions) against primarily reserve players.

Quinn represents hope for a franchise that has a 40-88 record since being re-launched as an expansion franchise eight seasons ago. Quinn is quickly making believers of his teammates and is receiving a hero's welcome in Cleveland that hasn't been extended since fellow signal caller Tim Couch was the club's first overall pick in the 1999 draft.

Unfortunately for the Browns, Couch went from being regarded as the second coming of Bernie Kosar to a catastrophic failure from which the franchise has yet to recover.

But does Crennel risk "ruining" Quinn by playing him before he is ready for a starting role like then-coach Chris Palmer did with Couch? David Carr and Joey Harrington are other examples of high-profile quarterback draft busts who could have used more seasoning before being prematurely thrust onto the field.

But rookie quarterbacks are like snowflakes. No two are exactly the same.

Peyton Manning and Troy Aikman took their lumps during miserable rookie seasons as starters in Indianapolis and Dallas but still forged careers that will ultimately find both of their busts in Canton. And it didn't take long for another Hall of Famer who slid in the draft's first round — Miami's Dan Marino — to make an immediate impact.

Quinn seems to have the same kind of mental toughness to weather whatever storms may develop playing in an offense that was overhauled in the off-season with a new coordinator (Rob Chudzinski), running back (Jamal Lewis) and more high-priced offensive linemen (rookie left tackle Joe Thomas and left guard Eric Steinbach). Quinn also is accustomed to the spotlight from playing at a high-profile university like Notre Dame, not to mention being humiliated publicly on draft day when sliding to the No. 22 overall selection.

Still, Crennel may want to give Quinn — who missed 11 days of training camp practices in a contract holdout — more time to grow while Frye or Anderson serves as a stop-gap replacement.

Browns GM Phil Savage told the Willoughby, Ohio-based News-Herald during Saturday night's preseason game against Denver that it was "unrealistic for Brady to be in the mix for the opener." But until Cleveland plays its preseason finale Thursday against Chicago, Savage and Crennel should leave the door open to reconsider such a statement.

Really, there's no hurry to name a starter with the regular season not starting for another two weeks. I reflect back to the 2000 season, when former Miami coach Dave Wannstedt didn't anoint Jay Fiedler ahead of Damon Huard until after the preseason finale. The Dolphins went onto an 11-5 record and their only AFC East crown this decade.

What's most important for the Browns shouldn't be how quickly Crennel announces a starter at quarterback, but ultimately charting the right course of action, one that balances the importance of a respectable start toward Cleveland's playoff aspirations with the need to properly develop Quinn.

Patience please, Dawg Pound.

I think you're a Quinn mark that you believe he's perfect when he's not. He's not going to become a pro bowler if you rush it too fast, I can guarantee you that.

I never said he was perfect, I just think hes better than the other 3 QBs that are in contention and hes proven that.

Yeah, but he might be alot better than the other 3 if you just give him time. There's no point forcing him to start when you'll still not get into the playoffs. I believe that the young players should learn until at least halfway thru their second year then starting.

^But my point is. is that everyone says that Quinn is just as bad as the fourth string Ds, so whats the big fuss that he did so well? Anyway, I just thought Id point out my reasons. I hope these rumors are false, but if not, I expect him to be starting by week 8

Peep, wow. Ya, first I dont like Eli Manning for demanding the trade to be a starter. I dont like Jamarcus and your boy Brady for holding out. They are rookies and should take what the team offers them as NFL is a much bigger stage than the NFL. Bradys preseason stats are nothing. They get him snaps, but thats about it. Right now, if 21 teams passed on him, I dont think he is better than Charlie Frye. And I the Browns took him as a Franchise Player at 22. :roflmao: He isnt going to start this year unless Frye and Anderson get hurt. He is going to sit the bench to learn. I honestly think it was a dumb move my Cle. as they dont have a veteran QB, but now have 3 young QBs. Too many chiefs not enough indians here.

It is like Eli, he sucks. Still does, he hasnt had the NFL leadership that he needed from a veteran QB. If he had stayed in San Diego and learned from Brees. Wow, ELI would have a ring. But as for Brady, he can suck a dick. He doesnt deserve any more that riding the bench after holding out like that as a rookie. I know that is going to piss you off Peep. But oh well. If you are a Browns fan and not a Quinn fan. We will see you on Sept 9th. We I mean the Pittsburgh Steelers. You better hope they dont start Quinn. The Steelers are going to roll into Cleveland, and you will be able to hear crickets in the dawg pound. LOL. Well peep. lol...I dunno anymore, I just dont like these non humble players coming to the NFL these days. Sorry.
