Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch admits the club's financial troubles are likely to get 'scary' once the 2011/12 campaign comes to a close.
Pompey entered administration earlier this season, incurring a 10-point penalty and slipping into the Championship drop zone.
It is difficult to see how the situation could get much worse, but a summer break without any fixtures will see the South Coast club struggle to generate funds.
That means the payment of player salaries and general running costs could be a problem, with Birch aware that things could get worse before they get better.
He told The News: "Staff and players are paid monthly but I cannot say what the outgoings will be over the summer.
"It will be a different figure given what players leave. There is a bit of breathing space but not very long. I cannot put a timescale on it.

"When the season is going we get gate receipts and Football League money.
"Pre-season is not a sigh of relief. There is no income then and that's when it starts getting scary."
The Football's League decision to release £800,000 to the club in distribution fees will see Pompey through to the end of the season, and Birch admits talks regarding a possible takeover will continue for as long as there is interest.
He said: "We are inviting offers. There is no figure on how much is needed to buy the club, we don't want to put figures out there.
"We'd rather let people come in, have a look and bid.
"Fratton Park is not a stumbling block. People will want to buy the ground and so some kind of development to enhance it."
