Gamers can today start using their PlayStation Vita to make video phone calls, as popular voice over IP service Skype is now rolling out for Sony's newest portable device
PS Vita users will soon be able to download the free Skype application from the PlayStation Store. While some users may be able to get the app today, it may take 48 hours for the app to arrive in all regions.

The Skype for PS Vita app will work with the Wi-Fi and 3G iterations of the device, and will run in "background mode," allowing users to receive calls while playing some games. Gamers will need to pause their game to answer a call, but will be returned where they left off after the call is finished.

Not all games will allow for this. Certain titles shut off network connectivity while being played, which will prevent incoming Skype calls. No mention was made as to which games would do this.

Additionally, the Skype for PS Vita app utilizes the system's front- and rear-facing cameras, allowing users to switch back and forth during a call.

When Microsoft purchased Skype for $8.5 billion last May, the company said it would continue to "invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms." Additionally, last June, images reportedly from a Sony key staffer meeting indicated Skype would come to the PS Vita.
