Chad Griggs (11-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is making the move to light heavyweight, and "Mr. Wonderful" will be there to meet him.
UFC officials today announced that the former heavyweight is dropping to 205 pounds, where he'll meet Phil Davis (9-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) at UFC on FOX 4.
UFC on FOX 4 takes place Aug. 4 at Los Angeles' Staples Center, and the main card airs on FOX.
Today's release did not detail where the Davis vs. Griggs fight will fit on the evening's fight card.
Davis looks to rebound from his first professional MMA loss, a January decision defeat at the hands of Rashad Evans. Had Davis proven victorious in the No.1 contender fight, he would have been granted a shot at current 205-pound champ Jon Jones.
Prior to the loss, Davis had racked up nine-consecutive wins to open his career, including UFC victories over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Tim Boetsch, Rodney Wallace, Alexander Gustafsson and Brian Stann.
Meanwhile, Griggs tries for a second time to earn his first UFC win. A three-time Strikeforce vet best known for his victories over Valentijn Overeem, Gianpiero Villante and Bobby Lashely, "The Grave Digger" made his UFC debut at April's UFC 145 event was suffered a first-round loss to Travis Browne.
Griggs now makes the cut 205 pounds in hopes of keeping his position on the UFC roster.
I knew Phil was going to be fighting on this card, but didn't think for one minute he'd be fighting Chad Griggs who's dropping down to light-Heavyweight.
