Paulo Thiago vs. Gasan Umalatov joins 'UFC Fight Night: Sonnen vs. Wanderlei'
A welterweight bout between Paulo Thiago (15-6 MMA, 5-6 UFC) and Gasan Umalatov (14-3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is the latest addition to the recently announced “UFC Fight Night: Sonnen vs. Wanderlei†card.
UFC officials recently announced the fight.
The event takes place May 31. As MMAjunkie reported Sunday, the show will be held at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo. “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil†coaches Chael Sonnen (28-14-1 MMA, 7-6 UFC) and Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1 MMA, 5-7 UFC) meet in the headliner.
The event is expected to air on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
Thiago, who fights in his home country for the third straight time, finds himself in a must-win situation. The 33-year-old opened his UFC career with a 3-1 mark and wins over notables Josh Koscheck and Mike Swick. However, he’s just 2-5 since then. Most recently, he suffered his third loss in four fights with a submission defeat (due to strikes) to Brandon Thatch at UFC Fight Night 32.
Umalatov, meanwhile, recently made his UFC debut after an 8-1 run in his native Russia. However, at UFC 169, the six-year pro and former army contractor suffered a decision loss to Neil Magny.
