"On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed that Heyman wanted Black to wrestle and defeat Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36. The victory would have handed Black the biggest win of his career. He would have been solidified as a top star on the Raw brand."

"Heyman did not get his wish and Drew McIntyre got that spot instead. The feeling at the time was that McIntyre was more over with the fans. He won the 2020 Royal Rumble and went on to defeat Brock Lesnar for the WWE championship in the main event of WrestleMania 36."

Not even the first I've heard of this tbh so I buy it. I thought originally I'd heard Drew was a guy Heyman was also considering and was fine with that but Idk I don't remember if he was removed from raw creative by rumble time or not

I don't think this is necessarily news. If nothing else, it was already known that it was coming down to Black and McIntyre to be that guy who beat Lesnar, perhaps it was never stated outright that Black would have also beat Lesnar though, had they gone with that plan (though I think it coulda been assumed).

Anyways...

I don't think they were wrong to go with Drew in the situation because he was on more of an upward trajectory already and him getting that defining win was the final step to completing his comeback story. I remember Black being hot, but he coulda always got someone on that tier right below Lesnar, and been put on track to have his moment at SummerSlam or something instead.

If I recall, he actually beat Lashley at Mania 36 didn't he? In some thrown together meaningless pandemic shit?

Damn. That could’ve been HUGE for him tbh. Wow. Heyman surely has a good mind I’ll give him that.

His mini-feuds with Murphy and Cesaro were excellent at least.

I don't know what they were thinking having him become a complete afterthought in the feud with Seth's faction. I guess that whole storyline ended up falling to shit over time though due to the injuries of Joe and the AOP guy(s).
