ONE FC 17 results: Adriano Moraes, Geje Eustaquio set up flyweight tile fight
ONE FC now knows who will fight for its vacant flyweight title following wins from two contenders at today’s “ONE FC 17: Era of Champions†event.
ONE FC 17 took place at Jakarta’s Mata Elang International Stadium. The card streamed in North America from Indonesia as an online pay-per-view.
In the headliner, Brazil’s Adriano Moraes (11-1) locked in a third-round arm-triangle choke to force a tap-out from Japan’s Kosuke Suzuki (10-4-2).
one-fc-17-headlinerMoraes, who scored takedowns with surprising ease during the scheduled three-rounder, attempted the choke on multiple occasions after forcing the fight to the mat and continually moving in to dominant positions. Suzuki initially fended off the chokes, and he also put Moraes in some compromising situations during his escapes, but the Brazilian never found himself in any real danger.
After the fight hit the mat in the third round, Moraes finally got his opening. After moving to mount, he transitioned to the arm-triangle choke and got the tap-out from the other hard-to-submit Japanese vet at the 1:25 mark of the round.
In other action – a fight that took third billing on the card – Geje Eustaquio (6-2) secured his flyweight title shot by earning a narrow unanimous-decision victory over Kentaro Watanabe (10-5). Watanabe found early success and landed some power shots, but Eustaquio eventually shook it off and proved a bit more technical with his striking over the next two rounds. In the end, the judges unanimously awarded him the decision.
A date hasn’t been set for the Moraes vs. Eustaquio title fight.
Fransino Tirta, Aung La N Sang get stoppage wins
In the event’s co-headliner, Fransino Tirta (16-0-1) made a successful ONE FC debut and extended his undefeated record with a quick and efficient win over fellow bantamweight Sami Amin (4-2).
While coaching and business ventures had kept Tirta busy and on the sidelines since July 2011, the fighter got to compete in his home country of Indonesia for the first time in nine years. He made the most of it with a quick takedown, an easy transition to mount, a quick readjustment to Amin’s back and eventual tap-out via rear-naked choke.
The stoppage came just 68 seconds into the fight.
“This is just the beginning,†said Tirta, suggesting he’ll keep a busier fight schedule now that he’s competing for ONE FC.
After an early fire-fight with his opponent, middleweight Aung La N Sang (15-9) reversed his position on the mat, moved to mount position and then quickly stopped Mahmoud Salam (4-5) with heavy ground-and-pound punches. The stoppage came at the 1:06 mark of the opening frame.
In a featherweight bout between ONE FC newcomers, Ev Ting (7-2) exploded with a late-first-round flurry to put away Yohan Mulia Legowo (7-3). As punches began to land cleanly, a staggered Legowo backed into the cage and dropped to a knee, and Ting forced the stoppage with a pair of solid knees to his face.
In flyweight action, Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke (1-0) made full use of ONE FC’s liberal rules and relied on a variety of strikes, including soccer kicks and fight-ending knees to his downed opponent, to stop Jomanz Omanz (0-1). After a flurry of punches and head kicks landed cleanly early in the fight, Amnuaysirichoke delivered knees to the face to force a stoppage at the 4:33 mark of the round.
In the first main-card bout, Gianni Subba (4-1) nearly ended the fight in the first round but had to wait until the second to finally tap out resilient flyweight Ruel Catalan (2-5) via triangle choke. Subba initially added an armbar attempt to the choke but ultimately used a series of elbow strikes to force the tap-out.
