ONE FC 15 results: Fernandes retains title with one-sided win over Ueda
ONE FC bantamweight champion Bibiano Fernandes (16-3) defended his belt in style, earning a one-sided decision win over the always-tough Japanese veteran Masakatsu Ueda (18-3-2).
The bout served as the headlining matchup of Friday’s “ONE FC 15: Rise of Heroes†event, which took place took place in the Philippines at Manila’s SM Mall of Asia Arena and aired on the U.S. via online pay-per-view.
Fernandes was the aggressor from the start, scoring an early takedown and later advancing to first mount and then back control. Ueda survived, but as the fight carried on, Fernandes proved he was the superior fighter. He would again get to the back in the third round, eventually getting the left arm around the neck, but Ueda again survived until the bell.
The pace slowed a touch in the championship rounds, but Fernandes remaining in complete control. Ueda tired in the latter stages of the fight, and Fernandes was able to quickly advance to superior positions. Ueda held tough until the end, but he was never able to really counter against Fernandes, who was granted a clearcut decision win.
Folayang, Docyogen entertain in decision wins
In the night’s co-feature, Filipino lightweight Eduard Folayang (14-4) thrilled his countrymen with an exciting decision win over Kotetsu Boku (21-10-2). It was Folayang opened the action with a big takedown but was unable to capitalize on the position. Still, it was a strategy he would repeat in the second frame, as well, this time briefly seeking a guillotine choke that Boku patiently worked through, eventually working his head free. Both fighters unleashed fury on the feet in a striking-heavy third round, but it was Folayang who scored a knockdown and then later added another takedown, as well. Boku was happy to trade until the final bell, but Eduard Folayang was awarded the decision win.
In an entertaining flyweight matchup, Rey Docyogen (11-2) scored a 15-minute victory over Joshua Alvarez (12-7). It was who Alvarez threatened to end the fight early, working to his opponent’s back and looking for a rear-naked choke. Fortunately, Docyogen survived the hold, because the two would settle in and go toe-to-toe for the remainder of the fight. In what ended up as a thrilling back-and-forth encounter, Docyogen was awarded a decision win.
Lisita, McSweeney pick up quick wins
In a rematch of an August 2012 affair, Rob Lisita (14-5) got emphatic revenge for a decision loss to Yusuke Kawanago (13-4-2) with a 28-second TKO win. Lisita pushed forward with punches from the opening bell, and a clean left hand eventually sent his opponent to the floor. Lisita seized the opportunity to deliver rapid follow-up strikes on the canvas, ending the fight in quick fashion.
In a heavyweight matchup, Englishman James McSweeney (13-11) earned a devastating knockout win over Australian Chris Lokteff (12-2). The two fired off heavy punches and kicks from the opening bell, but it was “The Hammer†who would score flush. A big kick to the body wounded Lokteff, and McSweeney moved forward to attack, launching a huge knee that landed clean and sent his opponent crashing to the floor. McSweeney immediately turned to celebrate the walk-off finish.
Ataides, Julaton victorious to open main card
Brazilian submission ace Leandro Ataides (7-0) once again flashed his striking prowess with a quick TKO win over Tatsuya Mizuno (12-10). Ataides went on the attack from the opening bell, firing off punches that put Mizuno on the retreat. Unfortunately for him, Ataides refused to slow, and the strikes eventually found their mark, put Mizuno on the floor and ended the fight in just 47 seconds.
In an entertaining women’s matchup, boxing champ Ana Julaton (1-0) scored a come-from-behind, final-round TKO win over a gritty Aya Saeid Saber (2-4). Saber proved willing to stand and trade with her striking-specialist opponent, and she nearly ended the fight with a deep guillotine attempt on the floor. But Julaton dug deep in the final round, worked herself to top position and rattled off non-stop punches until the bout was waved off in the final minute of action.
Toshi, Subba pick up wins on short preliminary card
In an evenly-contested flyweight matchup, Eugene Toquero (5-1) closed out the preliminary card with a decision win over Gianni Subba (3-1). An early Toquero shot to the groin marred the opening round but didn’t seem to impact the remainder of the fight. The two went back and forth throughout the 15-minute matchup, but Toquero was just a little busier and earned the decision nod.
In the night’s first fight, debutant Jujeath Nagaowa (1-0) picked up a second-round TKO victory over Jeet Toshi (2-2). “Bad Girl†Nagaowa used takedowns to control the action in the opening frame, but it was a non-stop flurry of punches on the feet to a covering foe that earned her the win in the second.
