This has popped up in a lot of different threads, so it's pretty evident... we all miss Edge. So with rumors going around that we could see Edge make his return as early as this Sunday at the Royal Rumble, let's discuss Edge's much anticipated return.
Just a few questions though...
-How do you think the fans will respond to the return of the Rated R Superstar? Decent face pop? Monstrous reaction rivaling HHH's first quad tear? Some lingering heel heat?
-Are the WWE fans ready to embrace a face Edge? And if so, how should the character be handled?
-Where do you see ending up in 2010?
As for me I think Edge will no doubt receive a great reaction upon his return, especially if it has something to do with screwing Jericho out of a victory of some sort. However, I'm just a little worried about a surprise return for Edge. WWE has done this so many times and it causes the majority of fans to miss their return as it's usually done on a PPV. I was really hoping for a slow build return for Edge to get the fans pumped up and really build suspense that much more. Had this been the hotter WWE crowd we knew years back I really wouldn't doubt that Edge's return ovation could possibly rival that of HHH's. With the seemingly cooled down crowd reactions over the past few years I'm really not sure how raucous of a response he'll receive.
As far as a face Edge, yeah I think we're more than ready to see it. The guy has been heel for five years. In those five years he's proved he can run with the best of them and be a top heel. Although he wasn't quite stale yet, you could tell hints of the crowd wanting to like Edge. As one of the grittier characters in the WWE, much like Orton he was starting to get scattered pops and chants. I think the balance needs to be perfect with his face character though. He definitely needs to retain some of his raunchy, underhanded techniques that he used so well in the Rated R gimmick, to drop that completely would be a crime. No one is going to be a goody goody Edge at this point, nor are they going to want to see it.
I think 2010 will be a true telling year for Edge. His face turn could be a true trial for his character and really cement his spot as a versatile top star in the company. Aside from the obvious feud with Jericho, which I think could possibly turn out to be a virtual highlight real of 2010, I'm really hoping for a move back to RAW for Edge. I think if he does indeed stay face for a while there are some pretty good things he could do back on RAW. A much anticipated re-hash of his feud with Orton, Sheamus, (hopefully a heel) HHH at some point.
