According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that there has been talk in MLW about removing the weight divisions for their champions. Court Bauer is reportedly in favor of it and has been since he was a writer for WWE.
There is the question, and a debate in MLW, about whether this would work in the US. The wrestling public has been conditioned on weight classes after WCW and WWE had wrestlers in smaller weight classes appear not on the level of the bigger stars. The goal is to make the titles mean more, although they might have to wait until they get a TV deal to do that. The idea is to make the audience see that weight classes don’t matter over time.
Dave Meltzer noted that the audience these days doesn’t see weight classes as important due to smaller wrestlers overall and a less pronounced size difference than in the 80s and 90s. It’s believed that they can be taught with the right talent and matches, especially with Mexican wrestlers, who have that as part of their product.
