World Tag League 2021 teams set
12 team league begins November 14
星取表_EN1200800.png

The lineup for World Tag League 2021 has been finalised, with 12 teams set to face off in the single block league starting November 14. The top two point scoring teams will meet on December 15 at Ryogoku Sumo Hall to determine who walks away with the WTL trophies and faces IWGP Tag Team Champions Dangerous Tekkers at Wrestle Kingdom.

Guerrillas of Destiny (6th entry, 6th consecutive. 2020 winners)
10.jpg

Seven time IWGP Tag Team Champions Guerrillas of Destiny head into their sixth World Tag League brimming with confidence that comes from having broken their dual winter curses. For years, despite their record setting tag team championship legacy, G.o.D had never won World Tag League nor had they secured victory in the Tokyo Dome. Last year, both curses were lifted, and while G.o.D head into WTL 2021 without the IWGP tag Team Championships, they do so having accomplished successful G1 Climax campaigns that turned a lot of heads. Could the Guerrillas be at their most well rounded, and dominant this year?

Dangerous Tekkers (3rd entry, 3rd consecutive, IWGP Tag Team Champions)
07.jpg

IWGP Tag team Champions Dangerous Tekkers are in the hunt to secure their first World Tag league trophies, and to call their own challengers for titles that they have no doubt helped to elevate over the course of 2021. Zack Sabre Jr.’s run of success in the G1, ending with an extremely competitive challenge to Shingo Takagi at Power Struggle, will only put more eyes on him and his team’s titles this year. Yet after rib injuries and a difficult middle stretch to his G1 campaign, question marks may circle around Taichi. Can the two come together to come out on top in Ryogoku?

Great Bash Heel (6th entry, 1st in two years. 2015, 2016 winners)
02.jpg

Back in the World Tag League mix after Togi Makabe was away from the ring last year, he and Tomoaki Honma are hunting for their third World Tag League trophies. While they are two of the older statesmen of this tournament, the bonds that bring Makabe and Honma are even thicker than most families, and the loyalty GBH have for one another could see them to success.

TenCozy (9th entry, 1st in two years)
03.jpg

Six time IWGP Tag Team Champions, a record second only to G.o.D, TenCozy have not won World Tag League in its current incarnation, but have in its G1 Tag League era. That speaks to the combined experience of Satoshi Kojima and Hiroyoshi Tenzan, who up to last year had been in every single World Tag League tournament since its 2012 inception. Now looking to get back to the top, can an impressive and hard fought 2021 for both men end with a fairytale victory?

Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI (3rd entry, 2nd consecutive)
05.jpg

The CHAOS combination of Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI have come close to the gold on several occasions through 2021 and now rejoin World tag League after threatening the top spot last year. Goto and the Headhunter will be doubly motivated having lost the NEVER Openweight 6-Man titles at Power Struggle, and YOSHI-HASHI especially will be gunning for his second ever championship. Could it be Shoto-Lights Out-for the competition?

EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi (2nd entry, 2nd consecutive)
11.jpg

After Yujiro was one of the first members to welcome EVIL to BULLET CLUB, assisting the King of Darkness to his New Japan Cup 2020 victory, and EVIL returned the favour by making him a core member of HOUSE OF TORTURE, the two became two thirds of the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Champions at Power Struggle, and now join their second consecutive World Tag League. Could more gold be dragged to HOUSE OF TORTURE hands?

Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens (4th entry, 3rd consecutive)
12.jpg

Bad Luck Fale and Chase Owens had their difficulties in gaining traction in their third World tag League in 2020 but would gain ground when they came up with the Grenade Launcher tag team finisher. The devastating move might be even more effective this year as Owens has had an impressive year that saw him to the KOPW 2021 trophy briefly and brought him some successes in the G1. With Fale returning to rings after the bulk of the year working in the New Zealand Dojo, can they pick up where they left off and become a feared combination?

Tetsuya Naito & SANADA (debut entry)
06.jpg

The first of five new combinations to the World Tag League, Tetsuya Naito and SANADA are the most effective as a team, having already secured a brief IWGP Tag Team Championship reign earlier in the summer. They want to prove this was no flash in the pan, and with Naito now fully healed from his knee injury incurred during the G1, they’re ready to take the trophies, and take back the gold.

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Toru Yano (debut entry)
01.jpg

It’s been three years since a rift created by the defection of Switchblade Jay White eventually led to CHAOS and Hontai forming an allegiance. Some strange combinations have been birthed from that union, and perhaps this is the strangest of them all. Yano and Tanahashi have had bitter feuds circling around stolen title belts and non consensual haircuts barely a decade ago, and now make an odd couple tandem. Could they be the most unlikely World Tag League winners of all time?

Great-O-Khan & Aaron Henare (debut entry)
09.jpg

After the Ultimate Weapon joined United Empire early in the spring, Aaron Henare now teams with Great-O-Khan as the group’s representatives in this tournament. As Will Ospreay and TJP have combined effectively in the US, and combinations of Jeff Cobb with both O-Khan and Henare have both been successful, not to mention Aussie Open waiting in the wings in the UK, United Empire seem to be at their very most dangerous when in the tag team space. O-Khan and Henare ave already racked up wins on the Road to Power Struggle tour, and could be very much in the mix come December 15.

Yuji Nagata & Tiger Mask (debut entry)
04.jpg

Tiger Mask is already one half of the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions with Robbie Eagles, and could potentially become half of the heavyweight champions as well, as he combines with fellow veteran Yuji Nagata for the World Tag League. These experienced strikes could well kick their way to the front of the line.

Minoru Suzuki & TAKA Michinoku (debut entry)
08.jpg

Minoru Suzuki returns to domestic action after a long tour in the United States, and does so with the returning TAKA Michinoku! Michinoku has been away from NJPW rings for over two years, but has been heading up the Just Tap Out promotion and dojo, and will be looking to make his opponents do the same- but how will TAKA interact with former protege Zack Sabre Jr?

World Tag League night 1 (November 14) Preview
Tag tournament kicks off in Korakuen
星取表_EN1200800.png

After best of the Super Junior 28 sees its first card on Saturday November 13, the very next day sees World Tag League 2021 kick off as 12 teams vie for the trophies and a spot at Wrestle Kingdom 16.
Watch LIVE or in English on demand on NJPW World!

Main event: CHAOS (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (Tetsuya Naito & SANADA)
WTL_20211114_07.jpg

Our main event will see Tetsuya Naito return to NJPW rings after withdrawing from G1 Climax 31 due to knee injury. He will reform his former IWGP tag Team Championship team with SANADA as they head into their first World Tag League opposite Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI. The CHAOS duo butted heads with naito and SANADA in the summer as both teams headed toward a three way for the tag titles in MetLife Dome in September, and now will go head to head for the first time. Who secures the first main event two points of World Tag League?

6th Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi & Toru Yano vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi)
WTL_20211114_06.jpg

Hiroshi Tanahashi and Toru Yano might be an odd couple through this World Tag League, but will be united in their distaste for HOUSE OF TORTURE tonight. Yano and Tanahashi both have ill feelings left over from G1 against Yujiro and EVIL, while EVIL and Yano will certainly still have their spring collisions over the KOPW 2021 trophy in mind. Will Tanahashi and Yano turn out the metaphorical lights in the HOUSE OF TORTURE tonight, or might EVIL and Yujiro literally send Korakuen into darkness?

WTL_20211114_05.jpg

5th Match: United Empire (Aaron Henare & Great-O-Khan) vs BULLET CLUB (Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens)
For Aaron Henare, his defeat to Bad Luck Fale and Chase Owens at the hands of the Grenade Launcher during World Tag League 2020 was crushing. His poor record teaming with Hiroshi Tanahashi last year would start wheels turning that would eventually see him reinvented in the United Empire. Tonight, Henare will bring a changed man to the ring against someone in Fale with whom he has a long history. But will O-Khan and Henare start a campaign of domination, or will Owens and Fale show how far they’ve come in the intervening year as well?

WTL_20211114_04.jpg

4th Match: Great Bash Heel (Tomoaki Honma & Togi Makabe) vs Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa)
Direct tag record: 3-1 G.o.D WTL record: 1-1

G.o.D and GBH have been violently tied together ever since Tanga Loa joined Tama Tonga and the two immediately captured IWGP Tag Team Championship gold in April of 2016. The two teams would go on to meet again in the finals of G.o.D’s first World Tag League that year, with GBH on top in a violent war; Honma and Makabe will be looking to tap into that violence again here. GBH were the first back to back WTL winners five years ago, and now G.o.D, their ‘World Tag League curse’ exorcised, are looking to achieve the same feat. Who takes their first two points?

WTL_20211114_03.jpg

3rd Match: TenCozy (Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan) vs Yuji Nagata & Tiger Mask
Two veteran teams will face off in the third match of the evening. While few will have either team circled to win the whole tag league, it would be a significant mistake to look past either team. Tiger Mask won junior heavyweight tag gold with Robbie Eagles during the Road to Power Struggle, and could be a unique double champion in future.

WTL_20211114_02.jpg

2nd Match: Dangerous Tekkers (Zack Sabre Jr. & Taichi) vs Suzuki-Gun (Minoru Suzuki & TAKA Michinoku)
World Tag League will kick off in incredible contentious form, as IWGP Tag Team Champions Dangerous Tekkers head into a Suzuki-Gun derby. The boss of Suzuki-Gun is back, and how will ZSJ interact with his former mentor and mouthpiece as TAKA wrestles his first NJPW match in two and a half years?

WTL_20211114_01.jpg

1st Match: Yuto Nakashima vs Kosei Fujita
Singles record: 0-0-1

After Yuto Nakashima tests himself against Ryohei Oiwa Saturday night at the BOSJ opener, his return continues against Kosei Fujita tonight. Fujita, Oiwa and Nakashima will all be wrestling singles matches throughout this tour; who will win their own miniature tournament as each tries to show they are the future of New Japan?

World tag League Night 2 (November 17) Preview
World Tag League continues in Toyama
wtl_EN1200800.png

November 17 will see the second set of World Tag league 2021 matches in Toyama’s Techno Hall.
Watch LIVE or in English on demand on NJPW World!

Main event: Dangerous Tekkers (Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr.) (1-0) vs BULLET CLUB (Bad Luck fale & Chase Owens) (1-0)
Direct tag record: 2-0 Dangerous Tekkers

WTL_20211117_07.jpg

Headlining in Toyama, Bad Luck Fale and Chase Owens meet Dangerous Tekkers. Both teams picked up their first wins in Korakuen Hall, Fale and Owens haveing to work somewhat harder to get the Grenade Launcher victory over the United Empire than the IWGP Tag Team Champions did as TAKA Michinoku found himself destroyed as he was hazed back into the Suzuki-Gun fold. This is not going to be the de facto handicap match that Taichi and ZSJ’s league opener became, but with an 0-2 record to overcome, it will be a rough hill to climb for Fale and Owens. Could they shock the tag champs?

6th Match: Los Ingobernables De Japon (Tetsuya Naito & SANADA) (1-0) vs Suzuki-Gun (0-1)
WTL_20211117_06.jpg

After a harsh beating at the hands of Taichi and Zack Sabre Jr. in Korakuen Hall, TAKA Michinoku returned to the Suzuki-Gun fold Sunday, and after experiencing the King’s brand of ‘tough love’ will now be able to team much more effectively with Minoru Suzuki tonight. That’s the hope at least, and perhaps the only hope for Suzuki-Gun as far as LIJ are concerned. After a victory in their opening bout while, in Tetsuya Naito’s words ‘I was at my very weakest’, Naito has declared that he and SANADA will not just win the World Tag Legaue, but will do so with a perfect record. With Michinoku my his side, will Suzuki, oft a thorn in the side of Naito, put paid to perfect plans?

5th Match: United Empire (Aaron Henare & Great-O-Khan) (0-1) vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi)(0-1)

WTL_20211117_05.jpg

Both teams head into their second bouts after some frustrating losses incurred in Korakuen. Reinvented as the Ultimate Weapon, Aaron Henare was determined to leave a mark on his early career mentor Bad Luck Fale, but ultimately fell to the Grenade Launcher. Meanwhile EVIL and Yujiro tried to pull every trick out of the book against Toru Yano and Hiroshi Tanahashi, only for a triple low blow to Yujiro Takahashi, EVIL and Dick Togo that sealed their fates. With a loss for Jeff Cobb and TJP in the US as well on Saturday, United Empire need to get back on the winning track in the tag team stakes, but HOUSE OF TORTURE have plenty of means to prevent that from happening.

4th Match: Toru Yano & Hiroshi Tanahashi (1-0) vs Great Bash Heel (Tomoaki Honma & Togi Makabe) (0-1)
WTL_20211117_04.jpg

Four veterans hit the ring as Great Bash Heel do battle with men they’re well familiar with. Yano and Tanahashi have been more allies than enemies of GH in recent years, but will bring every bit of a competitive fight to Toyama as they look to stay undefeated.

3rd Match: TenCozy (Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan) (1-0) vs CHAOS (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) (0-1)
Direct tag record: 1-0 CHAOS

WTL_20211117_03.jpg

The first direct tag meeting for both teams in four years, Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI will be looking for a repeat of their 2017 WTL victory here tonight against TenCozy. The veteran six time tag champions picked up an impressive win as Kojima powered through punishment to lariat Tiger Mask and gain two points in Korakuen Sunday. But the CHAOS side, burned from a loss to Tetsuya Naito and SANADA on night one, are doubly hungry to get in the hunt. Who comes out on top?

2nd Match: Tiger Mask & Yuji Nagata (1-0) vs Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa) (1-0)
WTL_20211117_02.jpg

2020 World Tag League winners G.o.D look to follow up on their victory over GBH on Sunday with a second win against another veteran combination in Tiger Mask and Togi Makabe. Nagata and Tiger’s first match loss was a narrow one against six time IWGP Tag champions TenCozy; will they fare any better against seven time champs in G.o.D?

1st Match: Yuto Nakashima (0-0-2 this tour) vs Ryohei Oiwa (0-0-2 this tour)
Singles record: 0-0-3

WTL_20211117_01.jpg

Kicking off the evening, Yuto Nakashima and Ryohei Oiwa continue the ongoing battle of NJPW’s new Young Lions. Will one or the other finally see their first win tonight?

I'm 50 minutes into Day 2 come on guys it's Tag League step up. They really stuck faces vs faces in this one and both Matches were stale as hell. I hope this Show picks up.
