After nearly a decade since the last theatrical film, and three seasons of a bumpy television series, it looks like the Scream franchise is getting another film installment. According to a new report, there is in fact a new Scream film officially in the works. They’ve reported that Gary Barber’s Spyglass Media Group is developing the project.

As of right now, details for the new Scream movie are scarce. It hasn’t been confirmed whether the new project will follow the original four films, the two continuities within the TV series, or be an entirely new continuity altogether. But, given the everlasting popularity of the original four Scream films, I’d say there’s a good chance this could simply be taken into consideration as Scream 5.

Of course, Wes Craven, who directed the original four Scream films and partially helped develop the TV series, has since passed away. And it looks like original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson, who also wrote Scream 2 and Scream 4, is not involved with the project. At least not at this time, anyways.

The Scream rights were recently acquired by Lantern Entertainment along with all other assets owned by Dimension Films. The allegations against Harvey Weinstein drove Dimension into bankruptcy, and thus it seems to have breathed new life into these Dimension properties – as the Hellraiser franchise is also being redeveloped for a new theatrical installment.

While we don’t yet know how the new Scream movie will turn out, it’s interesting to know the franchise is still remaining active after all these years. It might’ve not become as serialized as Friday the 13th or A Nightmare on Elm Street, but at least it so far seems to have escaped their creative and legal trappings.

The Scream Franchise outside of my love for the Michael Myers Franchise it's one of my favs. I love the first three and I always have to check out all the films every Halloween. Now I wonder what new can be done with this, maybe some Meta stuff like New Nightmare did, but either way I'll be watching it for sure.

Scream without Wes Craven is blasphemous.

Look at what they did with Nightmare on Elm Street without his input.

Just do a rip-off and call it something different.

I agree with @Deezy

Of course I'll check this out and never say never. But I don't expect it to be up to much. Without Craven no longer around they should leave it alone.

I can't be upset about new slasher movies comin' out, no matter what the quality may be.
