Netflix is in early development on the drama series, Tuesday Night Titans, set in the high-stakes world of professional wrestling, from creator and writer Michael Notarile (WWE Monday Night RAW, The Cleaning Lady), who executive produces alongside Jon M. Chu (Wicked, Crazy Rich Asians) and Caitlin Foito through Chu’s Electric Somewhere banner.

Netflix declined to comment.

Set in the spectacle-driven world of professional wrestling, Tuesday Night Titans follows a tenacious writer who risks her career in the big leagues to recruit her estranged childhood best friend – a ‘jobber’ wrestler on the indies – to join the same behemoth company they idolized in their youth. Their destinies become entangled as they battle personal demons, ruthless colleagues, and their complicated history in an industry where “kayfabe” – wrestling’s staged reality – isn’t confined to the ring, but bleeds into every aspect of their lives.

Tuesday Night Titans is also the name of the 1980s wrestling talk show that later evolved into a variety show, also known as The TNT Show. However, the original USA Network series is not connected to the new project.

The wrestling series development news arrives following Netflix’s multi-billion-dollar deal with WWE, making the streamer the official home of Monday Night RAW, which debuted in January. There have also been campaigns for Netflix to pick up the Starz wrestling drama, Heels, for a third season, including support from WWE Superstar CM Punk.

Notarile was previously a writer for WWE Monday Night RAW, giving him first-hand insight into the world of wrestling. His TV writing credits also include Fox’s The Cleaning Lady and the network’s medical drama, The Resident. Up next, he will co-executive produce on an upcoming Showtime series. His debut feature made the 2019 Black List, and he is currently writing films for Netflix and Monarch Media. Previously, he developed pilots with Amazon and NBC. Notarile is repped by UTA, Kaplan Perrone, and Yorn Levine.

Chu most recently directed Universal Pictures’ critically acclaimed Wicked, starring Oscar-nominated actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, which garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. His other recent projects include the adaptation of the musical In The Heights for Warner Bros. and Crazy Rich Asians. A TV series for HBO based on the book series by Kevin Kwan, which includes Crazy Rich Asians, will also be executive-produced by Chu.

He is currently in post-production on Wicked: For Good, premiering on November 21, and is attached to develop to direct the highly anticipated biopic for Britney Spears based on her memoir, The Woman in Me, with Universal as well as Dr. Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll Go! with Warner Bros and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot. His previous films include GI Joe: Retaliation, Now You See Me 2, Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never, and more, representing over 1.3 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Chu is repped by UTA and Artists First, with legal by Goodman Genow.
