With James Spader leaving The Office, and Rainn Wilson leaving early next season for a Dwight spinoff (with showrunner Paul Lieberstein at the helm, another soon to be Office exile), there's been a lot of talk about what will become of the long-running NBC comedy next year. It has yet to be officially picked up for another (ninth!) season and much of the cast still has to re-up their contracts (John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms). Now Deadline is reporting that there are now serious talks about "rebooting" the series.

Yes, the word reboot is in quotes because it wouldn't be a pure reboot. Deadline claims that Office EP Greg Daniels is considering refeshing the show - a 2.0 version that will feature new characters along with some old ones. Daniels is supposedly setting up a meeting to pitch this new "Office 2.0" to NBC execs. Deadline's also reporting that much of the cast want next season to be their last, and that the number of episodes that the stars actually sign on to be in is also up in the air. So it could be that next year's Office turns into something more resembling the final season of Scrubs; with a new cast supported by the occasional appearance of one, or more, of the old stars.

Big fan of The Office, but it was only a matter of time before they did something along these lines. Hopefully this "reboot" they're talking about works out for the show.

Not too keen on the idea of a reboot, the Scrubs reboot failed and I can't see an Office one succeeding. Honestly if they are losing Dwight and James Spader then I think they should close out the show. Can't wait to see more about the Dwight spin-off, can only say that I am surprised that it didn't happen earlier.

It is time to finish this show, it has been one of the favouite comedys of recent years, but really it peaked in the first four seasons and they have never been able to match that level since. Still it has had a good run, and they should be proud of it, and just move on.

Yea, just let the show fade off into the sunset. Have next season be the last season and just move on.

I read about this a few weeks back, and I think it would be a horrible idea. The reboot, even if it's awesome, won't live up to what the fans want and will probably die off quickly. I can understand why NBC would try it since The Office is still one of the higher rated shows on the channel, but it'll just end up being a quick ratings gimmick.
I didn't know they greenlighted the Dwight spin-off. The concept sounds a bit dumb, but I'll definitely check it out

TV show reboots never work. NEVER!!!!

Seriously just end the show, before it's remembered as a show that jumped the shark.

You just can't run a series based off a name unless you force it like Saved By The Bell or all these Power Ranger reboots. Seriously the Scrubs reboot is forgettable and the last season of that 70s show when they lost half the show is what it sounded like when I read who was leaving here. That last season of That 70s should have never happened and neither should this. They are going to try to clear up loose ends while adding new characters that you won't have the time to get invested in.
