he has continued to be plagued to knee problems, even noting on his Twitter that he feared for a while he had suffered another ACL tear. He's currently off of television dealing with these issues.

Unsurprisingly, reports (F4Wonline via 411Mania) have now emerged that at least one official has recommended to Mysterio that he retire.

So, what is Mysterio's status in the company?

Interestingly, on his (subscribers-only) Wrestling Observer Radio show last night, Dave Meltzer noted that while "officially" Mysterio is due be back in June, the issue remains up in the air and a release isn't out of the question.

He noted:

The official company line on Rey Mysterio is that he will be back, hopefully, in June...after rehabbing the knee. But he may not be back at all. And it's not retirement, but there's something going on...there was stuff going on that they were working on perhaps a release, but they want merchandising rights...but officially he'll back in June.

While many Mysterio fans would undoubtedly be disappointed to see him leave, maybe it is the best option for him.

Mysterio has been so in and out of WWE for so long that if he were released now it wouldn't really matter to me. However I did want to see him get in the ring against Sin Cara and Hunico at least one time, but it's fine either way. I think TNA might snag him if WWE does decide to release him, and with a less heavy work schedule that might actually be the better option for Mysterio.

Obligatory "lol Meltzer" reply.

It's a shame to see Rey Mysterio get cut, but if so it's for his own good. Dude should retire for his health.

Honestly does anyone care at this point? He's living off past glories and it's harming himself that he keeps going.

It seems like injuries have started piling up on him and his health isn't the best anymore. It's sad that his future with the company is in jeopardy but the company can't depend on him to book him in match-ups if his health is in question. Perhaps it's best for him to retire.

He's still under a ring performer contract, costing them money while he's constantly injured. They can release him from that then sign him to a "legends" contract which is paid appearances and promotional/consulting work.

It'd be sad to see him go, but if it's for the best then just hang em up. Enjoy the rest of your life and don't injure yourself anymore Rey! :p

I don't really care at this point myself tbh. Wanted to see him pass the torch to another luchador (Sin Cara or Hunico, whichever they'd pick) before he went but I just feel bad for him considering his health. He should leave now before he has to get a full knee replacement or something.

I remember being in a similar topic one or two years ago in a brazilian forum. So many Rey marks. When I said he should retire they wanted to murder me :dawg:

Meh Rey who?

Harsh but he's doing nothing for like two years at least.
