EAST LAMPETER TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A murder mystery in Lancaster County began 19 years ago Wednesday.

Family members are still looking for the killer of a Lancaster County teacher, Christy Mirack, who was just 25 when she was murdered. She was found dead in her home.

Mirack's family, most of whom now live outside the area, still work closely with police.

"There are some things you can't forget," East Lampeter Township police Lt. Robin Weaver said. He was on patrol 19 years ago the night Mirack was murdered. "We would be so happy to give some closure to the family."

The East Lampeter Township Police Department still actively investigates the case. Investigators said someone beat Mirack to death in her apartment off Greenfield Road.

"This has been an emotional case for us as well," Weaver said. "It reminds us that we haven't solved this case yet and it's important to us to solve it."

Her younger brother, Vince, was 21 years old when she was murdered. He said he thought police would solve the case in weeks. He said the fact that it's 19 years later is frustrating.

He is 40 years old and a father of four. He told News 8 the loss of his sister is still so painful.

Fred Nell is interested in the cold case and hopes the 19th anniversary of Mirack's death will bring in new leads. Other efforts to get assistance include placing signs along highways with her picture and how to share tips.

"I think someone is going to drive by that one day, some day and say, 'I want to talk,'" Vince Mirack said.

His sister was a teacher at the old Rohrerstown Elementary School.

Nell said her absence is sad. "She wanted to make a difference in the classroom and knowing that 19 years later she still could be teaching today, making a difference, in the community," he said.

Her brother said he remembers fondly his caring sister and said each Christmas, losing her does not get easier.

East Lampeter Township police said they have DNA evidence in the case.

So far, police have only used the DNA to rule people out. Investigators said they continue to receive tips in the case, and they flesh all of them out hoping to solve the murder.
