Another year and once again mixed martial arts fans in New York will have to wait for the sport to arrive at Madison Square Garden… or anywhere else in the state for that matter.

The New York Daily News is reporting that the New York Assembly Democratic conference, behind closed doors, discussed and denied bringing MMA sanctioning to the floor for a vote this year. Speaker Sheldon Silver determined that the votes weren’t there for a bill to pass, according to the report, so it will not go to the floor for a vote.

“It will not come to the floor this year,” Silver told the Daily News. The conference, he said, “was pretty evenly divided.”

He went on to say that he felt MMA legislation in New York was evolving and that it could pass within the next couple of years, but currently felt support was about a “50-50 proposition.”

UFC president Dana White believed years ago that MMA sanctioning was on the cusp of passage in New York, but year after year it gets stalled out along the way.

It isn’t just a matter of infighting among politicians of New York over mixed martial arts, according to White. In his view, the UFC’s problems in helping get sanctioning for the sport passed in the Empire State has nothing to do with the sport; it has to do with unions… one in particular.

“In a nutshell, my partners, the Fertittas, own a company called Station Casinos. It’s the fourth largest gaming company in the country,” White explained recently as a guest on the Mark Levin Show. “They’re non-union. So the union, the Culinary Union in Las Vegas, has been using their pull in New York to keep us out of there.

“It really has nothing to do with mixed martial arts. It has to do with culinary business in Vegas.”

Regardless of who, why, when, where, or what, the simple fact is mixed martial arts in New York is once again non-existent, at least for another year.

:fp:

Don't know what it's going to take to ever get it legalized. UFC Isn't going to give up easily though. There's a ton of money in New York and they're absolute morons for not legalizing MMA yet.

I don't get whats so important about it though, maybe they are too hung up about the idea of golden boy Jones headlining MSG or some shit.

Theres way better places to hold events.

Seems like that's what they're going to be pulling for if they ever get legalized in New York.

MSG is a legendary arena. It is THE ARENA and to hold a top marquee fight there would garner millions upon millions. Yeah they can do that in other venues but Madison Square is special. It holds history and so many ties to historic happenings in sports that MMA holding an event there and experiencing that huge moment... it'll be something to be remembered.

But as far as New York once again denying passage... it's just dumb.

Such a stupid decision, someone needs to take control and just give them the go ahead to do it. Can't the Mayor overrule these idiots and allow it to happen? It will bring so much money to the state and yet they keep knocking it back.

I guess New York wants to remain "boxing country" and continue to hope that one day Mayweather and Pac will decide to have their match and finally agree to it.

There are so few big money fights left they are crazy to not tap into the MMA market when they can. UFC can then return each year and bring more money into the local economy. Kind of sad that they are clinging on to a dying sport.

Yeah I mean... seeing UFC come to ATL... mannnnn alive the revenue that had to come in from that was huge. Tourism, everything. And especially since it will be in MSG... you know the fight would have to be immense.

Its just... idiotic that New York would do somethin stupid like continue to hang on to boxing.

I'm a Boxing fan more than UFC, but with it being the biggest rising sport currently and drawing consistentally it seems stupid that New York won't legalize it.

It's like they are against having Boxing and UFC in the state. Its ridiculous. It is cool that in UFC Undisputed 3 you can have a fight in MSG :D
