Last Thursday, the UFC officially announced a welterweight bout between Diego Sanchez and former champion Matt Hughes. Over the weekend, Hughes revealed more details in a blog post.
“[M]y next fight will be against Diego Sanchez on September 24th in Denver, CO.,†Hughes said. “That’s all I know as of right now, I’ll post more information as soon as I can.â€
The fight is expected to be a part of UFC 135 at the Pepsi Center. Denver is considered the birthplace of the promotion as UFC 1 took place at McNichols Sports Arena in 1993.
Hughes was in the middle of a late-career resurgence after winning three-straight fights. However, B.J. Penn stopped his momentum cold with a knockout victory at UFC 123. Hughes first won the welterweight title in 2001. He then captured the belt for the second time with a submission victory over Georges St. Pierre.
Sanchez is 2-1 since moving back up to welterweight. He finished his lightweight stint with a loss to then champion Penn at UFC 107.
