Mass Effect veterans who tried to import their old save files into Mass Effect 3 may have noticed that Commander Shepard looks a little...different. BioWare acknowledged that they're correcting the issue.

"We are aware that some players are having issues importing the faces of characters from Mass Effect 1 or Mass Effect 2 into Mass Effect 3," said BioWare's Chris Priestly. "The issue is likely in how faces were detected when imported from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2, and we’re working on the best way to correct it for affected players."

Priestly didn't provide an estimate on when a patch will be released for the problem. However, he did present a workaround for PC gamers. A fan-made tool allows you to manually create a code for your character's face.

ME3 completes the story arc started back in 2007 with the first Mass Effect. The save data from one game can be imported into the next, affecting the storyline. Their character's facial appearance might seem like an insignificant part of the import process but still, it's the face you'll be looking at for hours worth of conversation. Plus, the game's face editor is so detailed that players spend a long time editing their Shepard.

My own Commander Shepard definitely got mangled from the import. Fortunately it wasn't too far off from the presets that shipped with the game, though. Thank heavens for my unoriginality.

ME3 launched today in North America on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. It will arrive in Europe on the 9th.
