SARAJEVO, BOSNIA (CNN) - A man fired shots at the U.S. embassy in Bosnia's capital, U.S. and local authorities said Friday.

Police in Sarajevo shot the man, and there were conflicting reports about whether he was killed.

The U.S. Department of State said local police shot and killed the gunman, but local authorities said he was wounded.

Several of the gunman's shots hit the embassy's wall, the State Department said.

The gunman also wounded a police officer, hitting him in both kneecaps, according to Bakir Nakas, the general manager of Sarajevo State Hospital.

The officer's injuries were not considered life-threatening, and he was undergoing surgery, according to Irfan Nefic, police spokesman.

Bosnia's TV1 broadcast footage of a bearded man in a long dark jacket pacing in front of the embassy with an automatic weapon.

A single shot is heard as the man falls to the ground. The video shows him briefly moving his head before law enforcement officials rush over.

Local media said the gunman was a 23-year-old man from Sangzak, Serbia.
