EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A 47-year-old Battle Creek man was found crushed under a car in Emmett Township on Monday morning.
Joseph Harmon was found dead under a Ford Taurus at Howard's Ceramic and Gifts in the 1500 block of Columbia Avenue East, according to the Emmett Township Department of Public Safety.
Employees of the business noticed legs under the car parked behind the building as they were opening the shop.
The JAWS of Life were used to lift the car, but Harmon was pronounced at the scene.
He had last been seen at about 9 p.m. Sunday and appeared to have been dead for some time when he was found.
The vehicle did not belong to Harmon. A hacksaw and light were found next to him.
The Emmett Township Department of Public Safety said on Tuesday afternoon that Harmon may have been trying to steal the car's catalytic converter.
Harmon had apparently lifted the car on a jack and was attempting to remove the converter when the car fell, police said.
